Black Radical Tradition in Urban Education
Position: Associate or Full (tenure/tenure-stream)
Appointment: Eight-month, full-time, tenure/tenure-stream: starting Fall 2022
The Department of Educational Foundations, Organizations, and Policy in the University of Pittsburgh School of Education seeks a faculty colleague to join our programs in Urban Education and the School’s dynamic Center for Urban Education as Associate Director for Anti-Racist Education or as Associate Director for Law and Policy, depending on expertise and interests. The selected candidate will join us at an exciting time in the School of Education’s history as we are currently engaged in efforts to deepen and expand Black educational studies School-wide. Specifically, we seek a scholar and educator whose work lives within Black radical tradition praxes and is anchored in history, geography, gender studies, and/or teacher education disciplines. This scholar’s work engages a range of educational organizations, contexts, and participants, including, but not limited to: teachers or educators, broadly conceived; school and district administrators; families; communities; organizers; and faith-based institutions. In addition to teaching and advising within the Urban Education PhD, EdD, and future MA programs, the selected candidate may also teach undergraduates to support the School of Education’s recent launch of its 4-year undergraduate teacher education program and/or graduate students across the Department’s programs.
The Center for Urban Education’s mission-vision is to transform education structures through research, teaching, and service that advance principles of collectivism, liberatory education, and equity and justice. The Center for Urban Education is currently engaged in Practices of Freedom, a re-imagining of teacher education preparation (School Receives $2 Million Grant to Transform Teaching and Teacher Education | School of Education | University of Pittsburgh ), Ready to Learn, a critical pedagogy math program (Ready to Learn Program Teaches Social Justice Mathematics to Middle Schoolers | Center for Urban Education | University of Pittsburgh ), and the Retired Black Teachers Project (Pitt Education Receives Transform for Tomorrow Grants | School of Education | University of Pittsburgh ), among other collaborative projects. Signature initiatives include the Heinz Fellows, a school-community partnership in social justice education (The Heinz Fellows Program | Center for Urban Education | University of Pittsburgh ) and the Summer Educator Forum, with the most recent forum focusing on forging futures through Black educational histories (CUESEF 2021 Forges Futures by Examining Black Educational Histories | School of Education | University of Pittsburgh ). Center projects are supported by several funders including the Heinz Foundation, McElhattan Foundation, Grable Foundation, Gates Foundation, the National Science Foundation, and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, among others. The Center for Urban Education is home to Negro Educational Review , one of only two U.S. education research journals devoted to the study of people of African descent, and home to Educational Researcher , an American Education Research Association journal.
Required qualifications:
- PhD in Education, Africana or Black studies, or related field/discipline
- Record of scholarship at the intersection of the Black radical tradition and education, including, but not limited to: studies in Black feminisms, geographies, history, decolonization, fugitivity, marronage, and racial capitalism
- Record of peer-reviewed publication and success with (or promise of) external funding for scholarship and/or practice/engagement work
- Record of relevant leadership experience
Preferred qualifications
- Experience critically preparing educators (particularly in preK-12 school contexts) and/or experience collaborating with freedom-minded communities resisting unjust praxis in education and society
- Experience and/or interest in designing or teaching online and hybrid undergraduate and graduate courses.
Salary and Rank
Rank will be commensurate with experience and subject to the University of Pittsburgh promotion and tenure process. Salary will be commensurate with rank.
