The Department of Curriculum and Instruction (CUIN) at the University of Houston (UH) seeks scholars and seasoned professionals for a faculty appointment at the academic rank of Associate/Full Professor to serve our Urban Education teacher preparation, Master’s, and Ph.D. programs.


The University of Houston (UH) is the second most ethnically diverse major Tier-I research university in the country and is designated as a Hispanic serving and Asian serving institution. Houston is the fourth largest and one of the most diverse cities in the country with a large international population. The College of Education at UH has long-standing partnerships with multiple school districts to share research and prepare highly effective teachers and educators to serve urban communities.


The Department of Curriculum and Instruction offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate academic programs in multiple areas of specialization. Our programs have a special focus on student success, social justice, diversity, and community engagement. We welcome candidates whose experience in research, teaching, and service demonstrate our commitment to diversity, excellence, and interdisciplinary collaboration. All three departments of the College of Education have many faculty members whose research interests and projects focus on English language learners' success. The successful candidate will have many opportunities for collaboration in the College and within the University.


Primary research responsibilities include an active research program in bilingual education, seeking and acquiring external federal funding, publishing scholarly work in high-impact venues, and disseminating work to national and international audiences. Primary teaching responsibilities will include expert teaching through face-to-face, online or hybrid delivery of bilingual education courses in the undergraduate, master’s, and Ph.D. programs. A successful candidate will also participate in course and program development, supervision of graduate student research and teaching assistants, community outreach activities, and service to the Department, College, University, and profession.


This is a nine-month appointment.  Review of candidates will continue until the position is filled.  The anticipated start date is August 2019.  Salary will be commensurate with the applicant’s qualifications and experience and will include benefits.     Applicants for this position must hold a doctoral degree in Bilingual Education or in a related field, as well as demonstrate an active record of scholarship and external funding commensurate with experience. There must also be evidence of effective teaching ability, commitment to student success, and service to the profession. The applicant must provide evidence of knowledge regarding current research-based trends and cultural contexts in US schools through research work and course instruction. Candidates with teaching experience in U.S. K-12 bilingual settings will be given priority consideration.
