Associate Materials Engineer

Position Summary:

The position will be focused on assisting other researchers in understanding the material science issues of additive manufacturing and connecting material properties to part end-use requirements. This will include assisting in planning and conducting experiments, analysis and reporting efforts related to material/process risk assessments and selection, troubleshooting, process improvement and/or material replacement, as well as structure-property and process-property relationships, and validation of part performance vs. end-use requirements. This position may involve handling metal feedstock powders and operating and maintaining equipment used in experiments or material characterization.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. BS degree in relevant engineering field (such as materials, chemical, mechanical, or aerospace)
2. 1 year experience in material characterization or testing (e.g. physical properties, mechanical testing, etc.) including test method selection or development, data collection, and interpretation
3. Working knowledge of metal additive manufacturing including laser powder bed fusion technology and/or polymer additive manufacturing including fused filament fabrication (co-op/internship or coursework acceptable)
4. Technical writing and verbal communication skills
5. Self-motivation with ability to work with minimal supervision
6. Capability of working in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary team environment
7. Proficiency with MS Office products (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
8. Due to requirements of our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be a U.S. Citizen

An R2 must meet all R1 minimum qualifications in addition to the qualifications listed below:
1. 3 years of experience in material characterization or testing (e.g. physical properties, mechanical testing, etc.) including test method selection or development, data collection, and interpretation

Preferred Qualifications:

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

1. MS degree in relevant engineering field (such as materials, chemical, mechanical, or aerospace)
2. Experience with Design of Experiments (DoE) and statistical analysis to include analysis of variance (ANOVA), t-Test, and F-Test
3. Experience with material properties database and/or PDM software
4. Experience working within an ISO9001/AS9100 manufacturing environment
5. Experience with process optimization, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis
6. Experience qualifying aerospace products and processes
7. Experience with SolidWorks CAD software and creation of 2D engineering drawings
8. Working knowledge of U.S. Air Force policies and procedures
