Job Summary

The Associate Industrial Hygienist (IH) provides Industrial Hygiene support to the Environmental Health & Safety Office (EH&S).  Primary responsibilities include providing technical and field support to the EH&S Laboratory Ventilation Management Program (LVMP).   The position will participate in a variety of industrial hygiene and lab safety tasks and will report to the Lab Ventilation Program Manager.  Duties may include acting as a customer liaison between Department Laboratory Safety Officers, Facilities Management & EH&S. This position also provides emergency response support on a team rotation basis. This position is based primarily in Cambridge, Boston, and Allston, offering flexible hours with the requirement of being on-site between 10 AM and 3 PM on most days. Position Description

  • Test chemical fume hoods and other exposure capture devices (ECDs) such as snorkels and ventilated enclosures.
  • Manage and maintain IH equipment as well as assist in updating IH equipment inventory control, set-up, calibration, use, and analysis guides.
  • Support general lab ventilation assessments.
  • Gather information about chemical inventories, benchtop processes and/or equipment setups for conducting Laboratory Inhalation Risk Assessment (LIRA).
  • Collect and assess lab experimental protocols for Laboratory Inhalation Risk Assessment (LIRA) baseline field assessments.
  • Collect air samples (direct reading instruments, sampling pumps, passive vapor badges, etc.) to assess ambient lab air quality.
  • Assist Lab Ventilation Program Manager in analyzing and managing sampling data.
  • Generate air sampling reports. 
  • Conduct respirator fit testing.
  • Support the management of chemical and product safety data sheet database.
  • Assist with EH&S project and program work, as needed.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in industrial hygiene, chemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, engineering or other related discipline is required.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience with IH monitoring equipment, local exhaust and general room ventilation systems, chemical properties data, chemical inventory systems, or related fields.  Education, internships and training may count towards experience. 
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, handling multiple assignments with diverse clients in different academic lab research areas (e.g., engineering, robotics, biology, chemistry).
  • Strong interpersonal and excellent verbal and written communication skills with attention to detail and the ability to work independently, are required.
  • Must be able to use database applications, Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, SharePoint and Teams. 

Additional Qualifications and Skills

Technology Skills Required 

Experience in chemical data review/entry and statistical data management is preferred.  Experience with the Gasmet DX4040 or Miran SapphIRe infrared spectrometers as well as other Industrial Hygiene equipment such as the TSI Velocicalc and TSI Portacount is a plus.  

Special Requirements 

Participates in EH&S Emergency Response Team on rotating basis (estimated at 6 to 7 times per year), as a cross-trained EH&S staff member, will be required to carry a mobile phone and respond to emergencies during non-business hours with other EHS staff. 


Physical Requirements

Ability to carry up to 40 lbs of equipment in a backpack or by its handle.  Must be physically fit and mentally alert at all times.  Must be able to frequently walk up and down five flights of stairs.  Must be able to routinely walk around campus and remain standing for many hours per day.  Must have sufficient mobility, dexterity, and endurance to perform field visits.  Must be able to access any area of the University to perform job duties.

This is a hybrid position that is based in Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
