We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join the diagnostics/biointerface science team within the Chilkoti lab at the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Duke University. Our bioengineering lab combines cutting-edge techniques from various disciplines, including: surface chemistry, inkjet printing, 3D printing, nanofabrication, biomedical optics, and molecular biology, among others. We combine these skillsets to develop innovative and clinically relevant diagnostic technologies, particularly those aimed at democratizing access to healthcare in limited resource settings (see recent publication: https://www.pnas.org/content/114/34/E7054 ) The candidate must have received prior experience in a laboratory setting in chemistry, engineering, and/or molecular biology, and have obtained an undergraduate degree in biology, chemistry, engineering, or a related scientific discipline. The applicant must be detail-oriented, independent, proactive, well-organized, and able to manage multiple and changing priorities as needed to move experiments and the research program forward, in a fast-paced environment. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a strong commitment to research and work ethic, and a positive attitude are required for this team-based environment. The candidate must be able to follow instruction from the PI with attention to detail and proactive follow up after meetings and meet lab agendas/goals in a timely manner. The candidate must be flexible and willing to function in a high-paced environment. The position is available for an initial one-year period with potential for renewal. Candidates intending to stay in this position for 2 or more years are preferred. Work Performed/Job Duties* •Confer with principal investigator to review work assignments and develop plans for research experiments and make modifications to existing procedures and techniques to meet the needs of the particular studies as required. •Technical duties, including: polymerization of glass slides, polymerization of gold slides, glove box maintenance, keeping stock and ordering chemicals, Scienion and BioDot printing, antibody conjugation, assay development, assay optimization, running dose response curves, microfluidic chip assembly, analyzing data, molecular cloning, protein expression, protein purification, and other duties. •Review laboratory methods, manual, scientific journals, abstracts and other literature for information applicable to research experiments. Review work of lower level laboratory personnel and assist in training new personnel. • Contribute towards grant deliverables, including: experimental work, data analysis, figure generation, report writing, and other duties. •Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
