Associate in Research

Work Performed Perform a variety of complex technical duties involved in conducting experiments in behavior, genetics, and evolution. Confer with principal investigator to review work assignments and develop plans for research experiments; make modifications to existing laboratory procedures and techniques to meet the needs of particular equipment as required. Review laboratory methods manual, scientific journals, abstracts and other literature for information applicable to research experiments Assist with fieldwork procedures for the sampling and processing of behavioral and morphological data from wild birds.

Assist with laboratory procedures for processing hormonal and transcriptomic data from blood samples from wild birds.

Assist with and conduct genetic studies of wild birds, including training and participating in molecular analyses. Familiarity with molecular biology procedures such as DNA and RNA extraction, PCR, and RNA quantification are required. Collect and organize data, document and draw tentative conclusions from experimental results. Use command-line programming to conduct bioinformatics and analyze transcriptomic data. Participate in data presentation and manuscript preparation. Organize lab safety training and compliance; clean and maintain laboratory equipment; other basic laboratory administration. Maintain sufficient inventory of material and supplies for performance of duties; coordinate purchasing. Assist in training new personnel and coordinate use of equipment and lab space among users; supervise undergraduate research assistants and advise other lab members in research protocols. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
