Boston University seeks a creative and collaborative attorney to join its eleven-lawyer legal department.  Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of the Board of Trustees, the attorney will primarily provide legal advice on business transactions, contracts, and corporate and intellectual property matters. Qualified candidates must be experienced in each of these areas but will also be expected to advise academic and business units of the University in other areas of law typical of a higher education practice as required by the needs of the office. The attorney will serve as the primary business attorney for a number of units, including Sourcing & Procurement and Information Services & Technology.

Juris Doctor Degree from an ABA-accredited law school. Licensed or eligible for immediate licensure to practice law in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Qualified candidates will have a minimum of five years of experience in a high-quality legal practice and excellent academic credentials. They will have outstanding written and oral communication and interpersonal skills, strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, and a demonstrated commitment to our institutional values regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion. Candidates must be able and willing to handle a broad range of legal matters, including multiple time-sensitive projects; high-profile matters; and routine day-to-day counseling. The successful candidate will be able to analyze complex issues, exercise excellent judgment to provide practical, effective advice to a broad range of clients, and work both independently and in a collaborative environment on a team of high-performing legal professionals.  

Specific experience in the following areas strongly preferred:

  • Experience in drafting and negotiating contracts, including software licensing agreements, service agreements, cloud computing agreements, vendor agreements and other legal documents memorializing a variety of general business and academic activities.
  • Experience advising on sophisticated business transactions and corporate compliance matters and the ability to develop expertise and advise in emerging areas of law.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new areas of law related to higher education as required by the needs of the office, including information security as well as requirements associated with federal financial aid and grants, other areas of state and federal regulation and other subjects.
