Position description
The Plant and Microbial Biology at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Associate/Full Project Scientist in the Shih Lab, in the area of Plant and Microbial Synthetic Biology.
The Shih lab carries out research on improving transformation and developing synthetic biology tools for improving bioenergy crops within the Plant Biosystems Design group at the Joint BioEnergy Institute. This project is a highly collaborative effort consisting of a team of researchers located at UC Berkeley and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
Responsibilities:

  • Lead, mentor, and train students, postdoctoral researchers, and other group members as necessary.
  • Serve as Lab management of plant materials and logistics of shared resources.
  • Closely collaborate with other Berkeley Lab divisions, national laboratories, and academic institutions.
  • Write manuscripts and contribute to grant proposals that lead to continued funding.
  • Present research at international conferences and publish in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals.
  • Maintain an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook of all work performed to ensure that others could duplicate results.
  • Attend group meetings and present status reports and scientific findings.
  • Research and development of synthetic biology tools for improving bioenergy crops.
  • Carry out functional genomics experiments, which requires Python coding experience .

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
PhD (or equivalent international degree)
Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
At least 4 years of postdoctoral experience
Preferred qualifications
  • A PhD (or equivalent international degree) in Microbiology, Functional Genomics, Synthetic Biology, or a related field
  • Strong computational skills, including proficiency with Python
  • Extensive experience with functional genomics, including the ability to carry out various functional genomic techniques
  • Demonstrated experience writing grants, including a successful track record of getting funding (grants or fellowships)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including a strong record of publication in high impact internationally recognized and peer-reviewed journals in the area of microbial genetics and synthetic biology, experience in the preparation and handling of scientific manuscripts, reports, and research posters
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills including experience performing collaborative research, and representing and promoting scientific projects to audiences of diverse technical backgrounds
