Job Description

The College of Liberal Arts at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMU-CC), invites applications from accomplished scholars with appropriate leadership experience for the 9-month position of Chair of the Department of Humanities at the Associate or Full Professor rank with tenure on arrival pending approval from the Texas A&M System Board of Regents. Candidates for this position must hold a Doctoral degree in History or a closely related field. Candidates with any field of specialization in History will be considered for the position. Rank will be determined upon review of qualifications.

The Department of Humanities is a multi-disciplinary department that offers undergraduate degrees, minors, and certificates in History, Philosophy, and Spanish, along with a master’s degree in History. The tenured, tenure-track, and teaching faculty within the department are responsible for the courses in those programs, courses required for degrees in Education, as well as multiple courses in the university Core Curriculum program. As a result, the Humanities faculty is responsible for more semester credit hours than almost any other department at TAMU-CC.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a team building, leadership vision that expands the achievements being made within the department, the College of Liberal Arts, and the wider university. Applicants must demonstrate past achievements and future plans connected to a well-developed research agenda, a strong commitment to service, and a record of excellence in teaching.  Given the breadth of subject matter foci and duties in the department, all faculty are expected to work cooperatively and professionally with colleagues and share in the responsibility of group endeavors that further the mission of the department, academic unit, and university.

The department chair is granted two administrative course releases per semester along with the standard single course release per semester for research and creative activity, resulting a 1-1 teaching load.  The successful candidate will be expected to teach either U.S. survey courses or World History survey courses along with upper-level undergraduate courses and courses in the History M.A. program in the candidate’s area of specialization. In addition to those teaching and administrative duties, service to the department, college, university, and community is required along with research activities.

Applicants must show a dedication to undergraduate and graduate student success and shared governance as well as a willingness to strengthen and expand links with the community and alumni. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to student success, an ability to develop professionals and engaged leaders, and the expertise to expand educational opportunities and improve educational attainment for under-served students and/or under-representative at institutions of higher education.
