Essential Job Duties
Department of Biological Sciences, College of Sciences
The Department of Biological Sciences seeks to achieve outstanding research, teaching, mentoring, consulting and collaborations on campus and worldwide. It does so within a cohesive department, where all students, faculty and staff receive fair and equitable treatment. The Department of Biological Sciences within the College of Sciences helps set the bar on campus for interdisciplinary scholarship and helps support many interdisciplinary units including the Center for Human Health and the Environment, and the Comparative Medicine Institute. COS also plays a key collaborative role in the Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program clusters, including those in Bioinformatics, Data-Driven Science, Emerging Plant Disease and Global Food Security, Environmental Health Science, and Forensic Sciences, among others. Please visit the College of Sciences strategic plan and culture charter to learn more about the College of Sciences.
Office of University Interdisciplinary Programs
The Office of University Interdisciplinary Programs, a unit within the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, provides leadership, direction, and oversight for the programmatic planning and implementation of university-wide interdisciplinary programs and initiatives. The unit focuses on bringing interdisciplinary approaches to local and global societal challenges in light of long-term predictions and scenarios. This office builds on 20 Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program clusters that came out of NC State’s previous strategic plan. It also connects new and longstanding programs that include: the Biotechnology Program, the Climate Solutions Collaborative, the Coastal Resilience and Sustainability Initiative, NC State Innovation and Entrepreneurship, the Long View Project, strategic clusters, the Sustainable Futures Initiative, and the Shelton Leadership Center. These units work as a team to tackle challenges and opportunities that transcend their individual mandates.
Both the COS and the Office of University Interdisciplinary Programs play an integral role in interdisciplinary efforts on and off campus, including with the Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program, the Data Science Academy, Global One Health Academy, the Integrative Sciences Initiative and Building, Museum-University Partnership, and the Plant Sciences Initiative and Building.
Genetics and Genomics Academy
The Genetics and Genomics Academy (GGA), focusing on how genetics and genomics interface with society, was established in 2021 and is part of a group of academies, including the DSA and the Global One Health Academy within the Office of University Interdisciplinary Programs. The academies work as a team to help spur interdisciplinary research, engagement, mentoring and education across campus. The team works within its subject domains, but also creates novel approaches to interdisciplinarity that can be adopted more generally and hence transcend those domains. The GGA maintains a close partnership with the Genetic Engineering and Society Center at NC State. Through this partnership, the GGA enables the university to be a global leader in the consideration of the social, policy and political dimensions of genetic engineering in particular, but also genetics more generally. This partnership facilitates close connections between GGA and social scientists and humanists on campus, a unique feature of the program.
In addition, the GGA serves as the hub connecting more than 150 faculty who engage in genetics- and genomics-centered research, or who use related tools in their research and training programs. GGA-associated faculty consider basic and applied questions, with a recognition of the land grant mission to bring science — here genetics and genomics — and its value to the people of the state, whether that is in the context of engagement, novel applications, comparative evolutionary approaches (and their applied benefits) or policy.
The Opportunity
NC State invites applications and nominations for the position of Associate Professor or Professor of Biological Sciences in the College of Sciences, and Executive Director of the Genetics and Genomics Academy. This position will require a working understanding of the broad research interests of the GGA members, a passion for interdisciplinarity, and an ability to make connections among diverse research projects, courses and engagement programs. The individual will have experience running a successful research program, building and sustaining academic programs, bringing together diverse groups of stakeholders, and supporting staff.
