The Associate for Graduate and Advanced Education, Program Generalist and Student Life Coordinator will be responsible for supporting the various affairs of the Office of Graduate and Advanced Education (OGAE), which is responsible for master’s, professional, and doctoral education, plus other related non-degree offerings, at NYU Shanghai. At all times, he/she will need to be an effective advocate for graduate education within the NYU Shanghai community and embody the standard of excellence the university expects of its graduate initiatives.

 

The OGAE at NYU Shanghai currently encompasses 7 master’s degrees, 11 PhD degrees, a semester study program, several hundred graduate students, nearly 40 faculty teaching graduate courses each year, and more than 30 faculty serving as doctoral advisors. It also provides support to the Institute for Cities and Real Estate in Emerging Markets. The OGAE collaborates with more than 25 peer schools and academic departments at the NYU campus in New York.

 

This position will serve two equally important functions, one of which is to be an operational generalist for all NYU Shanghai graduate programs. In this role, the Associate will develop and utilize a versatile set of skills and competencies to further the development of the OGAE in a variety of ways, from program administration to admissions, event planning and communications, orientation to graduation, faculty to alumni relations.

 

This position will also specialize in student life and student affairs across all OGAE programs, identifying ways to foster a community that is ever more dynamic, supportive, and interconnected for OGAE students whether through events, extracurricular activities, and enhancing resources / services adapted for graduate students. The Associate will join the university during a time of significant anticipated growth in the OGAE and will have the opportunity to contribute in an impactful way to NYU Shanghai’s continued effort to become a leader in Chinese and international higher education.

The main responsibilities include:

 

  • Develop expertise, knowledge, and special competencies relating to OGAE student life and student affairs. Brainstorm and implement ideas for enhancing the OGAE student community and student services. Work across all OGAE programs and facilitate the sharing of best practices;
  • Serve and be responsive to issues of general concern that apply to all NYU Shanghai graduate programs. Make recommendations to leadership. Act as a steward of the combined best interests and initiator of discussion for the matters that are critical to all graduate programs;
  • Provide general operational support for master’s, PhD, semester study, short-term study, non-degree programs which may involve students, faculty, program administration, logistical coordination, liaising with New York partners, etc. as needed throughout the year working closely with OGAE colleagues;
  • Contribute to the organization and planning of key OGAE programs, such as student orientations, graduation ceremonies, and community-building activities such as graduate student socials, service learning opportunities, and alumni gatherings;
  • Coordinate student services through connecting students with resources, developing student handbooks and manuals, maintaining spaces on the NYU Shanghai campus, drafting communications, working with student leadership (such as cohort leaders), and graduate student housing;
  • Coordinate closely with other NYU Shanghai units, faculty, and NYU offices based in NY to ensure smooth operation of programs and to advocate for support. Facilitate synergies and partnerships with NYU Shanghai Student Life, Health & Wellness, Athletics & Fitness, Residential Life, Student Involvement, and Diversity departments;
  • Track, analyze and forecast costs and expenditures related to student life and programming;
  • Assist with admissions / recruitment / alumni initiatives for OGAE programs, as appropriate;
  • Assist in communications-related projects for OGAE programs which may include developing content/features to highlight program news, students, and faculty for Wechat and website publication, among other channels;
  • Remain abreast of competitive marketplace trends and benchmark similar programs and activities. Represent the OGAE and build new connections. Uphold a constant attitude of seeking ways to advance, develop, and improve the OGAE;
  • Establish effective and efficient operational policies and procedures, along with standardized, repeatable systems. Coordinate information dissemination among students, faculty, and administration;
  • Be available for periodic assignments and special projects that may pertain to all graduate programs;
  • Other related responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned by the Senior Manager for Operations and Administration. This position may also evolve in accordance with growth in the OGAE (such as with the introduction of new programs) and with the Associate’s own creativity, initiative, and interests.


Required Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; graduate degree preferred;
  • Study abroad experience highly valued.

Required Experience

  • Prior experience in student life / student affairs highly valued;
  • Prior experience in project management or program coordination in an English-language setting highly valued;
  • Prior experience in international education sector highly valued.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to align one’s own goals with the strategic direction of an institution, understanding and supporting the institutional values while also thinking creatively about institutional problem-solving;
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and independently in a cross-cultural environment, developing effective relationships with both internal and external stakeholders;

  • Demonstrated ability to be forward-thinking and to take initiative, anticipating implications and consequences and identifying actions before situations require them;
  • Demonstrated ability to show concern and sensitivity for understanding the needs of students and identifying how to enhance the student experience;
  • Native fluency in Chinese and proficiency in English required, with excellent speaking, writing, proofreading, and editing skills;
  • Working knowledge of web, social media, digital communications, visual design tools highly valued.
