Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

Student Affairs provides essential programs and services that encourage and support academic success and personal growth for more than 29,500 students enrolled in undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs at the University. These programs and services challenge and enable students to become compassionate and responsible citizens and leaders on the campus and in local and global communities through an inclusive, culturally diverse and growth-centered campus environment. Student Affairs includes 17 departments, more than 325 full- and part-time professionals, and over 800 student workers who work together daily with campus administrators, faculty, and students to foster an environment of student learning and success.

Position Summary

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

This position is responsible for assisting the Senior Finance Director of Students Affairs with management of business operations in Student Affairs, a unit with 19 departments, more than 325 full-time and part-time staff, and a collective budget in excess of $110M derived from a diverse array of revenue sources. This position is responsible for the financial analysis of all Student Affairs Revenue, including preparation, review, management, and identification of metrics for internal and external presentations to management and other departments. Additionally, the position is responsible for General Ledger management, Endowment and Gift management, Student Affairs quarterly and annual financial comparative analysis for all Student Affairs departments. This position reviews and centrally consolidates the capital planning analysis, deferred maintenance planning and analysis, budget analysis, as well as other monthly report compilations, financial review meetings with Department Directors, and other divisional or departmental budget/finance meetings. This position is responsible for monthly Student Affairs Finance onboarding of new staff and preparation of Finance training materials and presentations. This position serves as a redundancy to the Senior Finance Director of Student Affairs and has approval responsibility in all accounting, finance, and human resources transactions to maintain proper internal control audit expectations. This position is responsible for assisting the Senior Finance Director for Student Affairs with management of the overall annual budget process, working in conjunction with Student Affairs Finance Leadership team from Campus Health, Carolina Housing, Carolina Union, and the Office of the Vice Chancellor. This position reports to the Senior Finance Director for Student Affairs.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Mid- to late-career with Masters and 2- 4 yrs experience; Bachelors and 3-5 yrs experience

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
  • Knowledge of accrual accounting, financial forecasting, budgeting, and variance analysis; experience with accounting standards and principles.
  • Superior oral and written communication skills, sound business judgment, tact and diplomacy, and ability to interact and collaborate with personnel at all levels of the University and Student Affairs.
  • Demonstrated ability to present complex information to small and large group settings in accessible ways.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, including the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Excellent attention to detail and demonstrated knowledge of accounting, business, purchasing, and budget functions.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply sound judgment and discretion in problem-solving.
  • Extensive computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft applications (e.g., Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and the ability to quickly learn and utilize university accounting, budget, and human resources software.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
  • Minimum five (5) years or greater of professional-level fiscal management and business experience working at a university or other higher education setting with similar scope and complexity to UNC Student Affairs.
  • Previous demonstrated experience with Performa creation, forecasting, cash management, fund reserves, problem solving, financial analysis and approval authorization of HR and finance transactions.
  • Prior experience with gift, foundation, trust accounting and reconciliation.
  • Demonstrated experience with GAAP, GASB and audit controls.
  • Experience with PeopleSoft and InfoPorte.
  • MBA, MAC, or MPA.
