Job Summary

The Associate Director is primarily responsible for the development, administration, and coordination of testing, and assessment practices for course and related initiatives associated with the Oral English Proficiency Program (OEPP). This position reports directly to the OEPP Director and works in conjunction with other administrative staff to maintain the OEPP’s responsibility for the evaluation of Oral English Proficiency for prospective International Teaching Assistants including test administration, placement into English 620, and course and program evaluation. Additionally, the Associate Director will be responsible for mentoring and supervising the graduate teaching assistants in the OEPP.
 
The Oral English Proficiency Program (OEPP) serves the core university mission of teaching and learning through improving the quality of communication in undergraduate classrooms. The purpose of the OEPP is to coordinate and lead efforts to assure that graduate student TAs have or develop proficiency in English. The OEPP collaborates with campus departments to ensure students receive support to improve English language skills, gain teaching experience, and develop professionally. Undergraduate students benefit from opportunities to engage with prospective TAs from diverse backgrounds and provide feedback on classroom communication skills.


Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Administration of Purdue’s Oral English Proficiency Test (the OEPT) to international graduate students on campus each year. Develop, implement, and maintain testing instruments, procedures, and practices.
  • Teach one section per semester of English 620, Classroom Communication in ESL for International Graduate Students. This may include summer teaching. This responsibility includes the maintenance of student records, scores, and other required documents, and regular attendance at instructional staff meetings and trainings.
  • Coordinate with OEPP faculty/staff across the university to recruit undergraduate volunteers to observe, evaluate, and engage with international teaching assistants in English 620.
  • Mentor graduate teaching assistants in the OEPP.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:
Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in TESOL, Language Testing, or a closely-related field plus 6 to 7 years of experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Master or PhD preferred.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in Higher Education ESL assessment or testing and Teaching ESL to adults
  • Experience supervising and/or leading teams.
