Job Description

The office of Global Outreach and Extended Education (GOEE), a unit of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering Dean’s office, invites applicants for the position of Associate Director of Professional Skills and Workforce Development (PSWD) programs.

The individual will lead programming aligning with and extends the access mission ASU and the Engineering School to meet the professional development, continuing and online education, adult education, workforce development and training needs of industry and government partners. This includes the employed, underemployed, unemployed and underserved learners to upskill or have pathways to engineering and technical careers. The Associate Director is responsible for the general administration and financial management of PSWD programs and operations on campus, online, hybrid, and at client sites local, national and global in cooperation with GOEE and Engineering School administrators and staff, faculty, campus partners and support offices, and community and industry partners. Areas of administration and financial management include primary responsibility for programs; assistance with the development, funding, staffing, delivery, assessment and reporting on all programming; and the facilitation of PSWD strategic planning and assistance with the implementation of new strategic workforce initiatives.

The Associate Director of Professional Skills and Workforce Development reports to the Office of Global Outreach and Extended Education (GOEE) Executive Director and Assistant Dean.

Essential Duties

Leadership, Strategy, and Program Growth

  • Initiates and manages partner relations, representing the Fulton Schools’ and their needs in the community, and attracting resources for institutional priorities in a manner consistent with policies and procedures defined by the GOEE Executive Director. 
  • Collaborates with representatives of industry, government, and professional organizations to assess needs and opportunities for continuing education programs.
  • Conducts market reviews for emerging topics in the fields related to area of assignment.
  • Develops business plans and proposals for new programs to maximize revenue and extensions of existing programs.
  • Participates with the Engineering Dean and the Executive Director in overall corporate relations planning, relationship management, and execution of the Fulton Schools’ priorities
  • Oversees and participates in planning, developing and administering unit budget. Responsible for non-credit program budgets and assisting with the planning, development and administration of department budget
  • Develop and execute strategy for Schools’ professional programs including specific objectives and activities aligned to GOEE goals.  Conducts and assists with the development of long- and short-range goals.  
  • Represents the college/department and serves on various department and university committees.
  • Serves as representative of the University at state, regional and national organizations, boards, councils, and committees as assigned.

Team Management and Supervision

  • Provides leadership and direction for the day-to-day management of the GOEE professional program portfolio and associated staff.
  • Supervise the Manager of Professional Skills and Workforce Development and oversee the management of support staff (course moderators, coordinators, and program assistants) 
  • Develops, maintains and implements department policies and procedures.
  • Resolves problems and issues affecting the department and oversees measures to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the department.
  • Supervises, hires, trains, and evaluates assigned staff.  

Analysis and Monitoring

  • Manages and performs market analysis, including identification and assessment of potential markets, pricing strategies, revenue projections and competitive benchmarking.
  • Supervises the evaluation of programs and the use of evaluation results to improve future program offerings  
  • Prepares or coordinates preparation of financial and administrative reports; analyzes and interprets statistics, financial data, and management planning data for predicting resource needs and developing long range plans.
  • Assists with overseeing the development and evaluation of department programs.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND seven (7) years of related administrative experience, which includes four (4) years of supervisory experience; OR, Eleven (11) years of related administrative experience, which includes four (4) years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

  • Progressive experience working in a higher education institution, includes development of non-credit professional education programs
  • Experience working with non-traditional lifelong engineering learner
  • Demonstrated knowledge of strategic marketing and communication initiatives
  • Experience with budget development and management
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of educational programming, including faculty recruitment and curriculum development
  • Evidence of effective communication and working effectively with constituent groups important to the organization and the University
  • Evidence of a STEM background

Working Environment

Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate-controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, standing, walking.  Use office equipment including a desktop computer.  Lift up to 20 pounds.  Communicate to perform essential duties.
