About the Opportunity

The Associate Director of PhD Programs will be both a strategic and operational leader: Partnering with the Associate Dean of Graduate Programs to grow and manage the College of Arts, Media and Design’s PhD programs. A successful Associate Director will provide support to all the PhD students in CAMD. The Associate Director will be expected to plan and implement PhD student enrichment activities, inform college leadership on program trends through data analytics, and lead the strategic evolution of new PhD programs within CAMD.


Minimum Qualifications

Excellent communication, interpersonal, analytical and program management skills. Knowledge and skills required for this position are ordinarily acquired through a PhD degree, postdoctoral or similar research experience and/or three to five years professional experience in a University setting with student affairs, admissions, and/or faculty relations required; preferably a PhD granting / research level institution and in disciplines related to CAMD.


Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities

(20%) Management and Organization of PhD Programs: In coordination with the Associate Dean of Graduate programs, plans, manages, and directs the PhD program operations within CAMD, including managing RA/TA assignments. This program may be on the Boston campus, or may be throughout the Northeastern University global network. Contact person for the PhD network. Help cultivate a vibrant CAMD PhD student community. Assists the CAMD PhD Faculty and Student Committee.

(20%) Student Affairs: Working collaboratively with CAMD’s graduate team, academic departments, Associate Deans, and the Dean, the Associate Director will develop and administer academic programming for PhD programs within CAMD. Oversee student assessment (semesterly and yearly) as well as provide academic support to cohorts of students. Manage aspects of graduate student academic life in coordination with others at CAMD and the University, including (but not limited to) graduation clearance, program progression, co-op opportunities, and resolution of academic disputes. Manage the CAMD student hub for information provision. Point of contact for the CAMD PhD student spaces.

(15%) Recruitment and Enrollment Management: Working closely with CAMD’s graduate recruitment team, recruit students to the PhD program, and coordinate with department leadership and other relevant University partners on efforts to advertise, recruit, enroll and retain the highest number of top-quality PhD students possible. With guidance from the Dean/Associate Dean(s), design and implement recruitment plans for domestic and global initiatives. Working with institutional and College resources, provide enrollment trends & analysis and recommendations on enrollment strategies to be implemented.

(15%) Program Development: Working closely with CAMD’s graduate team and the Associate Dean of Graduate Programs, the Associate Director is expected to coordinate PhD course offerings at CAMD, manage the core CAMD PhD courses, identify and coordinate TA opportunities with departmental leadership and admins, in Boston and across the network. Ensure and provide appropriate training for PhD students for TAs and work closely with departmental leadership and admins for the integration of CAMD PhD students into their departments. Oversee curriculum documentation and other enrollment aspects of PhD programs that support and engage with the registrar’s office and fulfill other student scheduling requirements.

(20%) Research Development: Working closely with the Associate Dean of Research and CAMD’s research administration, as well as the Associate Dean of Graduate Programs, oversee and help improve student research activities throughout CAMD – assisting with developing and evaluating student research initiatives and opportunities, managing RA opportunities for students, managing student development and equipment funds, matching students with faculty research needs, tracking all student research activities and experiences, assisting with the acquisition of sponsoring for student research and fellowships, and helping with student recognition (i.e., awards) 

(10%) Graduate Programs Data Analysis and Insight: Working with the graduate team, the Associate Director will closely monitor recruitment progress, enrollments, course hours, and other key metrics for the College of Arts, Media and Design graduate programs. The Associate Director will use this data and analysis to guide their own decision making, but also provide it upon request to Associate Deans and/or the Dean.
