Job Summary

At the M4 level, the Associate Director, Payroll is responsible for overseeing all aspects of timekeeping and payroll processing functions within the HR Division of Purdue University.  Payroll Services provides timekeeping, payroll processing and accounting and employment verification to the entire Purdue University system.  Recommend, implement, monitor and manage payroll policies, procedures and internal controls for the University ensuring compliance is maintained.  Maintain integrity of the payroll and supporting ledgers.  Utilize and leverage technology and other university departments to streamline processes while maintaining the integrity of the payroll processes and related financial data.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership and direction to the Payroll Services department staff, including offering guidance and direction to staff on complex process, accounting, reporting, and policy issues.  Functional areas within Payroll Services include:  timekeeping, payroll processing and accounting, employment verification and payroll operational support.
  • Develop and implement payroll policies and procedures to ensure pay and timekeeping practices are compliant with all local, state and federal guidelines.  Monitor and stay current with payroll and timekeeping laws and regulations to ensure processes remain compliant.  Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to resolve compliance issues.
  • Provide day-to-day guidance and serve as first point of contact for time administrators and payroll administrators.  Provide training, evaluation and constructive feedback.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders such as, but not limited to, business offices, regional campuses, benefits and IT to produce accurate payrolls and provide necessary support services to university customers.  Assure excellent customer service to individual employees and other constituents of the University, serving as a point of contact for escalated payroll inquiries.

What We're Looking For:
  • Typically requires a BA/BS degree in Accounting, Management, Human Resources, Taxation or a related area
  • Six or more years of experience in office administration, payroll, tax or human resources
  • Consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of required education and related work experience
  • Knowledge of payroll processes from appointment, time and effort, calculation, disbursement, garnishment, overpayment and accounting
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate and develop staff
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly and timely communicate, verbally and in writing, with courtesy, sensitivity and respect as appropriate for the needs of different people and different situations

What Is Helpful:
  • Master's Degree in Human Resources, Accounting, Finance, Management or a related area
  • Work experience in higher education or an equivalently complex organization
