The Associate Director of Orthopaedic Surgery plays a critical leadership role within UCSD Health and the orthopaedic surgery department, overseeing clinical operations, patient care, and the integration of innovative care delivery and technology. This position requires a blend of operational expertise, administrative acumen, and the ability to lead and mentor a multidisciplinary team. Responsibilities include developing and implementing policies and procedures to enhance the efficiency and quality of orthopaedic services, collaborating with other departments to ensure comprehensive patient care, and participating in the strategic planning of the orthopaedic department. The Associate Director also plays a pivotal role in operations for orthopaedics.

Furthermore, the Associate Director of Orthopaedic Surgery is tasked with ensuring that the department adheres to all healthcare standards and regulations, actively participating in the recruitment and retention of top-tier surgical and support staff. They must possess exceptional skills in communication, leadership, and problem-solving to effectively manage the complexities of a high-volume surgical department. By fostering a culture of excellence, innovation, and patient-centered care, the Associate Director significantly contributes to the reputation and success of the orthopaedic surgery department. This role requires a deep commitment to clinical excellence, the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment, and a dedication to the ongoing education and development of the team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Implements and monitors the financial process for a comprehensive view of current and forecasted clinic performance, to include revenues, costs, industry trends, and reimbursements.

  • Manages the clinical and operational functions and staff. Recommends allocation of staff, space, equipment, and other resources to optimize the delivery of clinical services. Implements quality improvement systems. Ensures compliance with internal policies and external regulations.

  • Researches and prepares proposals for facilities expansion, satellite development, construction, space planning, capital equipment requests, and staffing needs.

  • Responsible for employee recruitment, performance evaluation, progressive discipline, and staff development. Works collaboratively with Labor Relations on bargaining unit issues and contract negotiations at the local level.

  • Research, develop, and recommend internal policies and procedures for identifying, eliminating or mitigating risk management issues within the practice(s).

  • Promotes a workplace culture with a focus on meeting or exceeding patient service standards. Develops an environment that encourages creativity, efficiency, engagement, quality of care, safety, and innovations in operations.

  • Implements processes and metrics to assure viability of existing programs and practice patient and staffing patterns, and optimize productivity, recommends operational performance improvements that impact marketability and service.

  • Assures internal policies and external regulations are followed in regards to billing and coding practices and cash handling.

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Bachelor's Degree in business, healthcare administration or related area; and/or equivalent combination of experience/training.

  • A minimum of seven or more years of relevant experience in healthcare field.

  • Experience and proven success in clinic/ health center management experience, with progressive expertise in practice management, scheduling, customer-service methods, incident reporting, regulatory compliance, accreditation requirements, and information technology.

  • Orthopaedic Experience.

  • A Master's Degree in business, healthcare administration or related area.

  • Ten or more years of progressive experience and proven success in ambulatory clinic operations/ health center management.

  • Four or more years of previous managerial experience in a healthcare setting.

  • Previous experience managing multiple clinic sites.

  • Academic health system experience.

  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.


Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $101,200 - $192,200 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $48.47 - $92.05

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
