Position Summary
The associate director of the Elon University News Bureau is a primary content creator and managing editor for Today at Elon, the university's news and information site. In this role, the associate director makes news coverage decisions, produces written and visual content for the site and for distribution to the media, and edits submitted content from the university community. The associate director also assists with media relations efforts and the management of the university's news distribution platforms. The associate director will oversee student workers assigned to the Elon University News Bureau by providing coverage assignments and supporting their work.

Minimum Required Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, marketing, public relations or related field with a minimum of five years of professional experience in journalism, communications, marketing, public relations or related fields.
Preferred Education and Experience
Master's degree in Journalism, communications, marketing, public relations or related field
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Excellent writing skills; proficiency in AP style; proficiency in using social media; proficiency in basic still photography and videography; ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents; ability to respond effectively to sensitive inquiries or complaints; ability to write opinion articles, speeches and other persuasive compositions; ability to work within a web content management system; ability to use multimedia software tools; strong interpersonal skills; strong strategic planning skills; strong multitasking skills and a high degree of work productivity. Significant experience with Microsoft Office package, specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Knowledge of and experience using various social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, lnstagram, YouTube and Linkedln. Prefer experience using Photoshop and/or lnDesign.
Job Duties

  • Write news releases and articles and distribute this information widely and effectively through Elon's communications channels to support the university's brand and elevate the university's reputation with a broad array of constituencies.
    • a. Cover Elon events, write feature stories and take photographs for use on Today at Elon, the campus news and information Web site, and social media distribution channels.
    • b. Write and distribute news releases, prioritizing work efforts to obtain the maximum and most effective media coverage.
    • c. Post, curate and manage daily content on Today at Elon.
    • d. Contribute content to Elon's social media platforms.
    • e. Work with the assistant vice president for strategic communications and media relations to coordinate news events hosted on campus, including news conferences, media visits, and remote interviews with media.
    • f. Curate and distribute a weekly email newsletter - This Week at Elon - for internal and external audiences.
    • g. Participate in planning meetings for Magazine of Elon and contribute stories and news articles as assigned.
    • h. Serve as a member of Elon's crisis communications team and coordinate and respond effectively to emergencies, threats to campus safety and security, and events and issues that threaten the university's reputation.
  • Cultivate strong partnerships with Elon faculty and staff members and gather story ideas through frequent contact.
    • a. Work in partnership with communications staff members in Elon's schools and colleges, as well as Phoenix athletics, to facilitate and promote media coverage of Elon news in those areas.
    • b. Communicate regularly with Deans, department chairs, and key faculty and staff members in order to build trust and gain story tips that can be used in producing content for the News Bureau and other communications.
    • c. Help coordinate Elon faculty/staff responses to media queries.
    • d. Alert the assistant vice president for strategic communications and media relations to stories that have national media potential.
    • e. Regularly attend office and university functions in a role as ambassador for the university, a media liaison and an active member of the University Communications staff.
  • Assist with the media relations efforts of the university.
    • a. Generate background information for story pitches and tip sheets about Elon news stories that can be distributed to local and regional media outlets, as well as Elon student media.
    • b. Work cooperatively with the assistant vice president for strategic communications and media relations on story pitches to national media.
    • c. Gather and document media mentions of the university, faculty, students and staff to be shared internally with key stakeholders.
    • d. Help keep faculty expert content up-to-date and look for opportunities to promote faculty expertise to the media.
    • e. Assist with regular media training sessions for faculty and staff.
  • Create and maintain effective information systems to facilitate maximum operation of the News Bureau.
    • a. Work with the university's social media manager to ensure maximum exposure of Elon news to social audiences, including but not limited to media, alumni and prospective students/families.
    • b. Supervise and assign stories to student writers to produce a stream of high-quality content for the university's communications channels.
    • c. Keep current with electronic media evolution. Explore and recommend ways to increase greater visibility and distribution of Elon news and information
