JOB SUMMARY:

The Associate Director of Residential Life and Housing is a live-on position that helps support the operational functions of the residence halls with supervisory responsibilities for 1-2 professional staff and 1-2 Graduate Assistants. The position works closely with the Director of Residential Life and Housing to develop and implement efficient operational practices and strategic priorities that intentionally focus on communication, programming and supporting residential student retention.

The Associate Director of Residential Life and Housing is responsible for establishing and implementing short and long-range organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies, and operating procedures. The position monitors and evaluates programmatic and operational effectiveness and enacts changes for continuous improvement. This position will make use of various software platforms to support student success (e.g., StarRez Maxient, eRezLife, SAAS, & EAB Navigate).

This position fosters collaborative partnerships with faculty, staff, and university partners, ensuring best practices in residential Life, housing operations, and efforts that support students' academic, social, and professional success.

SALARY INFORMATION:

In compliance with New York’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $60,000 - 65,000. Adelphi University considers factors such as departmental budgets, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

REPORTS TO: Director of Residential Life and Housing

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

  • Implement routine administrative procedures and documentation such as weekly reports, furniture inventories, key code lists, monthly damage billings, disciplinary files, accurate rosters, and other building records.
  • Serve as an administrator on call in the absence of the Director of Residential Life and Housing.
  • Oversee the development and facilitation of a comprehensive communication plan for the department including dispersing key information to students, prospective students, families and other stakeholders.
  • Oversee the development of a plan to support residential student retention including the development of intervention methods for at risk students and a comprehensive programming calendar to support student belonging.
  • Develop and support a strategy for the growth and facilitation of Living Learning Communities.
  • Serve as liaison to various departments such as Information Technology, Admissions, Student Access Office, Student Financial Services, Center for Student and Community Engagement, Public Safety, Facilities, and Athletics.
  • Live in one residence hall on campus and provide emergency responses and routine referrals for that building and others on campus as necessary.
  • Supervision of 1-2 residence halls with supervisory responsibilities for 1-2 professional staff and 1-2 Graduate Assistants.
  • Provide guidance and supervision to resident students and paraprofessional (Resident Assistant, Hall Attendant) staff in one residence hall.
  • Participate in departmental emergency on-call rotation.
  • Oversee the management of departmental databases such as StaRez and eRezLife.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity and understanding of students, faculty, and staff of varying racial, ethnic, religious, gender, cultural, disability, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Engage in problem-solving with students, staff, faculty, parents, and community members.
  • Serve as conduct officer as needed in minor disciplinary incidents.
  • Participate in a rotating emergency-on-call system for Residential Life and Housing. The on-call schedule is in effect 365 days a year.
  • Intervene in any crisis that arises on campus, regardless of whether formally on-call. This includes an appropriate response to these crises consistent with established department and university procedures.
  • Participate as needed at New Student Orientation, Admissions events, including, but not limited to: open house events and Accepted Students Days.
  • Assist in resolving conflicts between roommates or building residents. This may include mediating disputes, contracting roommate agreements, and, when appropriate, approving room reassignment.
  • Assist with research and evaluation projects, such as the annual Quality of Life Survey.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
  • REQUIREMENTS: (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • Knowledge and experience with student development programming.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of housing and other technology solutions software (e.g, StarRez, Maxient, eRezLife, Smartsheets).
  • Ability to serve as a role model and mentor for students and staff.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must live in the assigned residence hall in the apartment provided.
  • May require frequent walking.
  • May require frequent climbing of stairs.
  • May require moderate or heavy lifting.
  • May require frequent moving of equipment/furniture.
  • Requires frequent typing for extended periods of time.
  • EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree is required.
  • Master's degree is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of four years of professional experience in residential life and housing is required.

  • Resident Assistants (5).
  • Hall Attendants (10+).
