Job Summary

 

The Associate Director for the OWL at PU-Indianapolis is responsible for supervising and managing day-to-day activities, staff education, programming, and outreach. This position will collaborate with the faculty director in implementing strategic vision for teaching, learning, and research around tutoring/mentoring writing and fostering the unit’s support for research that links the mentoring of writing for students, faculty, staff, and wider university community. Develop, update, implement, and regularly assess tutor staff education curriculum. Support recruitment, training, and development of undergraduate writing consultants in credit-bearing, internship, or self-pace curricular environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for supervising and managing day-to-day activities, programming and outreach around undergraduate education for the Purdue OWL-Indianapolis. Collaborate with the faculty director in implementing strategic vision for teaching, learning, and research around tutoring/mentoring writing and fostering the unit’s support for research that links the mentoring of writing for students, faculty, staff, and wider university community. Collaborate with the faculty director and other associate directors, develop, update, implement, and regularly assess tutor staff education curriculum, whether in undergraduate, graduate, or on-going instructional contexts [conventional credit-bearing courses, group meetings, one-to-one mentoring]. Model effective tutoring through regularly scheduled time actively working with writers and tutors. 
  • In collaboration with the faculty director, supervise assistant directors for undergraduate education, undergraduate writing consultant coordinators, and regular undergraduate writing consultants. Support recruitment, training, and development of undergraduate writing consultants in credit-bearing, internship, or self-paced curricular environment.
  • Collaborate with larger OWL staff to address publicity, outreach, and everyday logistics of writing lab operations at its main and satellite locations.
  • Develop research initiatives in coordination with faculty director and that involve/model for/mentor undergraduates in OWL/writing theory, methods, and criticism.

Qualifications:

Required: 

  • MA/MS/MFA degree in English, Rhetoric & Composition, Curriculum & Instruction, or related fields.
  • At least 3 years combination of experience with mentoring writers and supporting tutoring efforts within a writing center/lab or classroom context. 
  • 4 to 5 years of listed experience preferred.
