JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Office of Planning, Assessment, and Institutional Research (OPAIR) at Penn State seeks to hire an Associate Director of Institutional Reporting who is eager to work alongside Institutional Research Analysts, Programmers and Reporting Specialists.  The Institutional Reporting team is responsible for internal and external institutional reporting and data submission, ad hoc studies, and requests for information using collegewide data.  The Associate Director position will support the team’s reporting efforts through advanced data modeling techniques, innovative approaches, and assisting with project management.  The Associate Director will serve a pivotal role as the backup for the Director of Institutional Reporting, ensuring seamless continuity and essential assistance in their absence.

Major Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Developing, managing, and maintaining complex queries for data extraction and analysis using SQL, Power BI, Oracle BI, and Microsoft Excel

  • Review, evaluate, and present results of projects to Director

  • May also review and evaluate the work of other team members

  • With guidance from the director, set priorities and organize work for self and other team members for assigned projects

  • Suggest and develop new techniques, concepts, and approaches to enhance efficiencies and accuracy of routine projects

  • Collaborate with teams to identify risks, issues, requirements; and design solutions for project-level activities

  • Facilitate collaborative partnerships among university teams by actively exchanging information and lending support to enhance data-related initiatives

  • Maintain data documentation and definitions

We are seeking a candidate who will proactively pursue continuous professional growth by remaining abreast of the latest advancements in data analysis, data reporting, higher education, and business intelligence practices. They will also share acquired insights and knowledge with the team to foster a collaborative learning environment.

The successful candidate will have the following:

  • Advanced knowledge and skills in higher education data analysis and reporting

  • Advanced experience formatting and presenting data analysis in written and visual formats

  • Experience and knowledge of external agencies such as IPEDS, AAUDE, US News, and other external higher education reporting agencies and systems

  • Advanced analytical thinking and proactive problem-solving skills

  • Be comfortable working as part of a team toward common goals, and to coordinate efforts and collaborate with a variety of individuals

  • Ability to produce cleaned, formatted, and accurate data for submissions to external agencies

Education and experience:

This position will be filled at the advanced level, minimally requires a Bachelor's Degree and 6 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

To be successful in this role, soft skills are equally as critical as technical proficiency. Preferred soft skill experience: Ability to learn new concepts and processes quickly; Excellent organizational and time management skills; Strong written and verbal communication skills; Ability to build effective relationships internal and external to the University; and Exercise excellent judgement to take initiative, solve problems, demonstrate critical thinking skills, and adapt to shifting priorities.

Preferred experience: Advanced knowledge of data management computer applications, query tools such as Microsoft SQL, and relational databases; 6 plus years of experience creating, modifying, and running queries in database systems, preferably Microsoft SQL; Expertise with Microsoft Office 365 applications with expertise in Microsoft Excel (Pivot tables, VLOOK UP, XLOOK UP, Power Query, Macros etc.); Ability to extract data from existing systems and restructure data in a manner that facilitates analysis; Experience with Business Intelligence tools, preferably Microsoft Power BI; Experience working in Higher Education is a plus, but not necessary.

The pay range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$97,100.00 - $145,700.00
