Associate Director of Fitness

The Associate Director of Fitness serves as a valued member of the Recreational Services leadership team working strategically to advance recreational opportunities for the University of Iowa campus. This key position works collaboratively with other areas of the Department, the Division of Student Life, the University, and external constituents to promote and facilitate fitness offerings. The Associate Director of Fitness provides leadership and vision for the daily operations and program management of personal training, group fitness, specialty, and custom fitness programming. The group fitness program offers an average of 100 group classes per week of multiple formats serving over 50,000 participants each year. The personal training program has performed over 3,000 sessions for ~ 300 clients annually. The fitness team also plays an integral part in the layout design of the fitness floors, activity rooms and the selection of fitness equipment provided in our facilities.

The Associate Director of Fitness will provide direct and indirect supervision, mentorship, and advocacy for multiple full-time professionals and over 100 part-time staff. As a member of the Recreational Services leadership team, this position will be expected to assist with global department initiatives related to student development, organizational effectiveness, assessment, professional development, budget, polices/procedures, and late-night programming.

Required Qualifications:

  • A master's degree in Exercise Science, Recreation, Sport Management or an equivalent combination of related education and experience is necessary.
  • Extensive professional experience (typically 3-5 years) at an institution of higher education involving fitness programming (personal training/group fitness).
  • NCCA accredited personal training certification and/or nationally recognized group fitness certification.
  • Extensive experience managing performance of part-time and/or professional employees involving the application of performance management system, practices, and tools to developing and improving individual, team, and organizational performance.
  • Extensive knowledge of and ability to apply policies and practices for planning and administering a budget.
  • Extensive knowledge and ability to work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and civil manner while appreciating the unique contribution of individuals.
  • Extensive knowledge developing, evaluating, and implementing assessments of assigned programs and facilities to analyze and provide improvements.
  • Extensive experience communicating and collaborating with internal/external partners and participants.
  • Current CPR, AED and First-Aid certification (or be able obtain within six months of hire).

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Personal Training and/or Strength & Conditioning certification that is NCCA accredited.
  • Group Fitness certification that is nationally recognized.
  • Extensive experience managing performance of professional employees involving the application of performance management system, practices, and tools to developing and improving individual, team, and organizational performance.
  • Extensive experience planning and hosting large scale fitness events.
  • Extensive experience in collaborating with facility operations and maintenance to execute fitness equipment bidding, purchasing and fitness floor layouts.
  • Extensive experience teaching group fitness classes for participants.
  • Extensive experience leading personal training sessions for clients.
  • Extensive experience leading continuing education workshops on fitness topics.
