Position Summary/Description:

The Associate Director of Energy Services is responsible for the strategic, capital, and financial planning and budgeting for Energy Services. This position manages Energy Services Information Technology and Project Planning & Implementation. The Associate Director is the main point of contact for major customers' senior management, including UNC Health, Athletics, Student Affairs, and various auxiliary operations such as Carolina Dining Services and the Carolina Inn. This position is the contact person for external utility providers, Duke Energy, OWASA, and Dominion Energy. The Associate Director establishes utility rates, oversees utility billings, and manages the administrative functions for Energy Services.
Energy Services includes the following operating units that provide the full range of energy services to the Carolina campus and UNC Health: Chilled Water, Cogeneration (combined heat and power), Electric Systems, and Water Resources (including water, sewer, non-potable water, and stormwater). The University employs a district energy strategy, with plants located strategically across the campus providing heating and cooling to buildings rather than each building having its own heating and cooling capacity. The various units are highly interrelated, with the products of some serving as critical components of the production processes of others. All Energy Services units are operated as receipts-supported entities. Campus units are billed for services, with the academic and health affairs areas representing about 65% of billings and the receipt-supported regions the remainder. Energy Services is a highly complex operation with revenues of over 120 million annually. The capital program includes about 500 million new facilities and infrastructure to be constructed over the next ten years. Energy Services is larger than most utility companies in North Carolina. For example, Piedmont Electric Co-op has revenues of about 40 million annually. The energy business continues to become increasingly more complex. The deregulation of utilities in several states and the entry of private corporations that broker energy into the marketplace has considerably increased pricing volatility, affected the availability of various fuels, and made strategic infrastructure planning much more complex. Increased climatological change resulting in more broadly variable weather patterns complicates planning and contributes to price volatility. Global political events also significantly affect the availability of fuels as well as pricing. In addition, environmental regulations, which are becoming more stringent yearly, affect fuel and infrastructure decisions.

Education and Experience:

Candidate should demonstrate strong organizational, management, administrative and communication skills.
Prefer candidate who will approach building a culture and community within the university to effectively and equitably engage students, faculty, staff, citizens, elected officials, and other stakeholders who hail from across the state and beyond.
