The College of Health and Human Sciences (CHHS) is one of eight academic colleges at CSU. It is human-centered with a focus on educating students for people-oriented professions. Our goal is to help students learn to apply creative, interdisciplinary research to solve social problems. The College houses the following units: Construction Management, Design and Merchandising, Food Science and Human Nutrition, Health and Exercise Science, Human Development and Family Studies, Occupational Therapy, Education, and Social Work. The College enrolls more than 5,600 students between our undergraduate and graduate programs.
The Office of Advancement in the College of Health and Human Sciences has a dual report to the College of Health and Human Sciences and the Division of University Advancement. This development office builds and maintains relationships with alumni and friends to garner financial support for students, faculty, programs, and facilities that are integral to providing a world-class education and advance the College’s research and teaching efforts. The team works with the Dean of the CHHS, CHHS faculty and staff, University Advancement, and various campus partners to lead, create, and implement successful fundraising and development strategies that will lead to future growth.
Position Summary
In collaboration with the CHHS Executive Director of Development and the CHHS Director of Development, the Associate Director of Development’s primary responsibility is to identify, cultivate, and solicit donors capable of making $25,000+ gifts in support of the College of Health and Human Sciences.
The Associate Director of Development (ADoD) will be responsible for managing a portfolio of prospects and donors, creating a strategy for continuous and meaningful prospect outreach, identifying appropriate donor engagement opportunities, and collaborating with all 8 academic units in the CHHS to engage donors and implement successful development strategies. Examples include but are not limited to: soliciting gifts to establish endowed scholarships and professorships, as well as naming opportunities in buildings and research centers.
The Associate Director of Development will work in a dynamic team environment with the CHHS development team, Dean of the College, University Advancement partners, and the CHHS academic units to cultivate new donor relationships, generate financial philanthropic support, and steward gifts to the College of Health and Human Sciences. This role will ensure we maximize and celebrate the philanthropic support our donors. A hybrid model of office-based and remote work is possible for the right candidate.
The ideal candidate for this position will be a consummate professional and will thrive in a fast-paced, metrics-driven fundraising environment. The ADoD must be results-oriented with professional characteristics that include leadership, adaptability, attention to detail, strong communication skills, flexibility, team orientation, and a commitment to cultivating long-term relationships. Eligible candidates must also understand how they can make a difference in supporting the future direction of both CSU and CHHS, while also meeting deadlines. Required Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university by employment start date
  • At least three years of experience working within the umbrella of business development: fundraising, sales, etc.
  • A track record identifying philanthropic passions that align with program needs
  • A demonstrated success in face-to-face solicitation and closing multiple gifts at $25,000+
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Adaptable to fast-paced and changing environments
  • A demonstrated ability to engage and communicate with diverse individuals, opinions, and perspectives
  • Ability to travel nationally and work non-standard hours (at least 30%+ of the time), including early mornings, evenings and weekends (as needed)
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, the ability to obtain a driver’s license, or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Strong understanding of and passion for the academic units housed in the College of Health and Human Sciences
  • An understanding of Land Grant Institutions and how it drives CSU’s mission.
  • Strong understanding of all facets of fundraising including major gift fundraising, annual giving, corporate relations, foundation relations, planned giving, and donor relations/stewardship.
  • Preference for 4+ years of experience in fundraising as a development officer, major gifts officer or stewardship officer at an institution of higher education
  • Proven ability to successfully identify and build relationships with donors then connect their interests with opportunities in a complex organization
  • Ability to problem solve and adapt to rapidly changing situations and successfully manage multiple complex projects from start to finish
  • Ability to work effectively with academic and administrative leaders, faculty, and volunteer partners in the process of building relationships with prospective donors
  • Demonstrates collaborative attitude and team-building ability; is open to and promotes new ideas
  • Ability to exercise considerable initiative, self-motivation, and discretion

Essential Duties


Job Duty Category Major Gift Fundraising
Duty/Responsibility
  • Responsible for managing a portfolio of approximately 70-90 donors and prospective donors, and creating successful cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies for them. 
  • Execute 20 strategic interactions per month with prospective donors and determine if they have capacity and inclination to make a major gift of $25k+.
  • Document all quality contacts and moves management strategies through the use of the prospect tracking system (Advance).
  • Present 2-3 major gift solicitations per month, after an initial period of building relationships with prospective donors.
  • Write, prepare, and present persuasive proposals that match the donor’s interests with the College’s fundraising priorities. Proposals should be comprehensive, and include a major outright gift ($25,000+) and planned gift (bequest) solicitations.
  • Maintain a high degree of confidentiality and adhere to the policies and procedures for accepting, recording and acknowledging gifts.
  • Must be able to travel 30% of the time, including overnight and occasional weekends.
  • Consider how communication, materials, and donor interactions are representative of, and inclusive to, donors of all backgrounds. Create positive relationships with internal and external constituents of all backgrounds.

  • Work in partnership with CHHS EDoD, DoD, faculty, and central development staff to ensure we maximize the philanthropic support of our donors, and work to build long-term pipeline of new major gift prospects.
  • Serve as key member of the development team by influencing and driving strategy. Participate in team strategy and activities related to donor recognition, development communications and proposal development.
  • Collaborate with central University Advancement teams (such as Alumni Relations, Prospect and Pipeline Development, Annual Giving, Donor Relations and Stewardship, Gift Planning, and other teams) to enhance awareness of College level fundraising priorities and partner on initiatives. 
  • Facilitate relationships with donors, prospects, and CHHS faculty and staff (current and former), and serve as an ambassador to connect our CSU community to the College. ·        
  • Acquire and analyze data on donors and their giving histories by running reports in Advance and researching trends such as giving frequency, giving amounts, engagement scores, etc. to build out the pipeline. Work to ensure pipeline is representative of constituents of all backgrounds.
  • Help move the CHHS and University Advancement commitments to inclusive excellence by contributing to creative inclusive environments and thinking about diversity, equity, and inclusion during the planning phase.
