Position Summary
Campus Recreation & Wellness provides quality recreational and educational experiences designed to positively impact the development of Elon students and contribute to the wellness of the campus community. The associate director is an essential member of the Campus Recreation & Wellness professional team and provides leadership to four professional staff members, oversees daily operations of four indoor facilities, coordinates student employee development initiatives, and assists the director in department administration and strategic planning.

Minimum Required Education and Experience
Master's degree in higher education, student personnel, recreation, sport management, or related field with at least 3 -5 years of progressive post-master's experience in a recreation facility and/or program management, preferably in higher education
Required Other Training, Certifications, or Licensing
- CPR, First Aid, and AED certification
- CPR, First Aid, and AED instructor certification (must obtain within first six months)
- Certified Pool Operator license (must obtain within first six months)
Job Duties

  • Facility Management
    • Manage the daily operations and scheduling of the Koury Center, Phoenix Activities & Recreation Center, South Campus Gym, Station at Mill Point Fitness Center, driving range, and outdoor recreation fields
    • Hire, train, supervise and evaluate approximately 75 student facility operations staff members
    • Manage the purchasing, maintenance, and replacement of all fitness equipment
    • Develop and ensure the enforcement of facility usage, safety, and security policies
    • Serve as the point person for all indoor facility maintenance
    • Represent Campus Recreation & Wellness at weekly Event Resource Group meetings
    • Represent Campus Recreation & Wellness on the Health, Safety, and Environmental Management Committee
    • Assist the director in the management of recreation facility construction and renovation projects
  • Recreation Professional Staff Leadership and Supervision
    • Provide leadership to the recreation team, which includes the development of annual goals and priorities, facilitating team meetings, and general support of staff and programs
    • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate four professional staff members overseeing experiential learning and outdoor adventure programs, fitness and aquatics programs, sport programs, and athletic training services
  • Student Employee Development Coordination
    • Oversee department student employee hiring, which includes advising the student hiring committee
    • Maintain and regularly update the student employee handbook
    • Manage student employee evaluation processes, which includes the Elon GROW program
    • Chair the department Student Development Committee, which includes awards, recognition, full staff developmental initiatives, and allocation of student professional development funds
  • Additional Responsibilities
    • Support departmental strategic planning, goal setting, priority completion, evaluation and assessment, and data-driven decision-making
    • Provide departmental leadership in the absence of the director
    • Support university events, including, but not limited to: Convocation, Commencement, Family Weekend, and events related to Admissions and/or New Student Orientation
    • Serve as a member of a Student Life Care and Response Team, which includes either serving in a rotational on-call emergency response role or providing initial outreach and follow-up support for student concerns
    • Serve on university, divisional, and departmental committees, task forces, and search committees
    • Other related duties as assigned by the director
