Position Description

The Associate Director of Business Intelligence (BI) reports to the Principal Data Architect and plays a central role in the analysis, design, development, governance, and performance tuning of BI Solutions at Harvard Medical School. This is both a management position and a technical leadership role on the Data Architecture team. This person will manage the BI Development Team as well as all servers and software used for BI Solutions.  The position has responsibility for the nightly load into our BI servers, and is responsible for rapid remediation of any issues that may arise.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead the BI Development team.  Responsible for effective staff management, including hiring and orientation, training and development, workflow and performance management, and the promotion of an inclusive and innovative work environment
  • Collaborate with the BI team to develop and enforce BI design standards and best practices.  
  • Manage established partnerships with both internal and external stakeholders. Onboard new stakeholders.
  • Advise and collaborate with more than 20 HMS stakeholder departments on Business Intelligence solutions. Our stakeholder list has been steadily growing over time.
  • Share in-depth knowledge as a resource to staff and community.
  • Function as a BI and Tableau subject matter expert.
  • Responsible for all work related to BI Development and BI Operations, including Tableau Administration and Architecture.  
  • Responsible for the proper and timely operation of all data flows into our BI Servers.
  • Responsible for the security of our data, ensuring appropriate access to data based on an individual’s role.
  • Act as primary contact with the various infrastructure teams that support our BI Servers:  DevOps, DBA, Windows Ops, Network, Security, and others. Collaborate with them on upgrades, patching, and server and software configurations.
  • Measure and manage BI performance. Coordinate code reviews to improve quality and learn from each other. Assist team members with solution optimization.
  • Assist with budget planning, monitoring, and vendor contracting as required.
  • Collaborate with University-wide leadership to formulate processes, policies and procedures.
  • Abide by and follow the Harvard University IT technical standards, policies and Code of Conduct.

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of seven years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience
  • Supervisory experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree or relevant work experience
  • Knowledge of information technology applications, processes, software and equipment
  • Advanced Tableau development skills
  • Advanced Tableau administration and architecture skills
  • Advanced knowledge of BI technologies and development methods
  • Advanced communication, technical and project management skills
  • Demonstrated team performance skills, service mindset approach, and the ability to act as a trusted advisor
  • Must take a collaborative approach to team management
  • Must have excellent presentation and communication skills

Certificates and Licenses

  • Completion of Harvard IT Academy specified foundational courses (or external equivalent) preferred

Work Format Details

This position is based in Boston, but the work may be done primarily remote. Any remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA*, CT, GA, IL, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, RI, VA, VT, and WA). Individual flexible and remote work options for this role will be discussed during the interview process. *Note: Harvard employees working in California must be exempt.
