SUMMARY:

Comprised of the Berklee College of Music, Boston Conservatory at Berklee, Berklee NYC, Berklee Abu Dhabi, Berklee Valencia, and the Division of Pre-College, Online and Professional Programs, Berklee is a preeminent institution of contemporary music, theater, and dance, offering degree granting programs in Boston, New York City, and Valencia, Spain, and through Berklee Online. Berklee Abu Dhabi offers pre-college and professional educational programs, and serves as a key cultural partner for the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism, including through the annual Berklee Abu Dhabi Culture Summit.

POSITION SUMMARY: 

Under the broad supervision of the Senior Director of Alumni Affairs and Annual Giving, the Associate Director of Alumni Affairs supports the development of and implements alumni programs to engage Berklee’s 74,000 alumni with the college, students, and fellow alumni.

The Associate Director is responsible for directing the college’s outreach to alumni with a focus on inspiring gifts of time, wisdom and philanthropy and serving as community manager to build and strengthen alumni relationships with the college, the music industry and each other. The Associate Director will take a leadership role in the planning, implementation, and stewardship of the alumni in the Associate Director’s assigned geographic regions and affinity groups.


 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

This position is responsible for the development and management of alumni in 5-7 specific geographic regions or affinity groups. 

  • For each region or for each affinity group, the Associate Director will:

  • Manage 3-5 or 10-12 local events per academic year based on size of region;

  • Develop a base of local volunteers to help create, host, and publicize programs;

  • Leverage social media, Berklee and Alumni Affairs print and online communications, podcasts, etc to enhance alumni engagement;

  • Seek opportunities to connect volunteers in the region or affinity group to the Berklee campus, to existing programs in Boston, to other alumni, and with students as appropriate and under the direction of the Senior Director;

  • Evaluate event effectiveness and return on investment based on metrics related but not limited to event and engagement capture, retention, and increasing connection by alumni to Berklee; and use this analysis to continually improve offerings to alumni;

  • Work collaboratively with regional development colleagues to ensure the success of development events to maximize fundraising potential.

  • This position will support the full Alumni Affairs and Institutional Advancement efforts by:

    • Recording all 1:1 and 1:several interactions with alumni in the IA database in accordance with IA-wide practices and expectations;

    • Supporting good data hygiene by collecting relevant alumni contact information and activity for IA Advancement Services colleagues;

    • Encouraging alumni participation in low-barrier giving, including the Annual Fund and crowdfunding campaigns;

    • Collaborating with key academic, co-curricular, and student service faculty, staff, and teams across campus; 

    • Working with the college regarding alumni participation in special Berklee events and/or performances, alumni reunions or summits, tribute events for a specific faculty or industry leader, etc., recognition programs;

    • Engaging specific alumni individuals and/or groups regarding instrument, ethnicity, gender, field of interest, geographical location, etc.

    • Coordinating with other Berklee colleagues to maintain up-to-date knowledge of the music industry and notable alumni based in each of those communities.

  • Assist at IA and Berklee events and perform other duties as assigned.


 

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: 

  • Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university.

  • Five or more years of increasing experience - working in a similar position for a complex non-profit institution with documented experience in building strong alumni outreach programs.

  • Experience working with merger processes and integrating two separate communities.

  • Demonstrated understanding of how alumni affairs is integral to a successful advancement program

  • Demonstrated high ability to actively listen to and communicate with all levels of internal and external constituents, specifically: trustees, alumni, parents, trustees, faculty, staff, volunteers, and donor prospects

  • Ability to identify, understand, and develop long term relationships with a wide range of individuals

  • Excellent written and verbal presentation skills

  • High level of customer service experience

  • Unsurpassed interpersonal and organizational skills

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

  • Appreciation for the Berklee and Boston Conservatory at Berklee missions.

  • Distinguished ability to deal with a wide-range of relationships and situations with a positive attitude

  • High level of comfort and experience in interacting with individuals ranging from global leaders in their professional fields to applicants to the college (often deemed “alumni in training”)

  • Familiarity with contemporary music, leading musical figures, and music technology

  • Familiarity with social media and digital marketing technology (MailChimp, Colleague, Informer, Workday, Constant Contact, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, etc.)


 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

This position has no direct reports. 


 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position is “campus-anchored” with an expectation that the employee will typically be onsite in the office 3 days per week, and remote 2 days. Exceptions may be made for weeks when the employee is traveling for Berklee business.
