The Robert J. & Nancy D. Carney Institute for Brain Science is committed to supporting research and facilitating collaborations in brain science across the Brown University community and beyond. The Associate Director in the Carney Institute for Brain Science provides oversight for all aspects of finance and administration of the Institute. The incumbent has expertise in university administration to increase the research impact and profile of the Institute by overseeing:

  • Financial administration, by managing institutional, endowed, and gift
    funds; serving as Carney lead in the university budgeting process working
    with central finance team; overseeing annual submission and approval of
    core facility user fees;
  • Research administration, by leading the management of pre- and post-
    award activities in Carney, overseeing pre- and post-award staff; and
    ensuring responsible and compliant financial management of awards;
  • Faculty affairs, by ensuring all Carney faculty recruitments are conducted
    effectively and responsibly; faculty salary commitments and offsets are
    reviewed regularly and changes anticipated; Carney faculty and their
    appointments are reviewed regularly in accordance with University
    policies and Carney Institute Standards and Criteria;
  • Human resources, by overseeing staff hiring and managing a team of
    administrators, serving as HR point of contact for the Institute and
    supporting teams;
  • Operations and administrative support, by overseeing daily operations
    of the center, including daily management of Carney staff.

The Associate Director directly supervises teams of staff administrators in the areas of finance, research administration, and administrative support. This position reports to the Director of the Institute.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in business, higher education administration, or science
    discipline or equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • 5+ years of experience and increasing levels of responsibility in academic
    administration, particularly in finance and sponsored research operations
  • Familiarity with federal and foundation funding mechanisms
  • Familiarity with faculty affairs
  • Managerial and organizational experience
  • Ability to work in a complex environment that requires communicating with administration, faculty, staff and students.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • Willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive campus community
