Position Summary:
The Associate Director of Academic provides research, design, and curricular support to the Assistant Dean of Students and Academic Success in the development and implementation of all academic success and bar passage programming. Through a courtesy appointment to the CWSL Legal Writing faculty, the Associate Director teaches legal writing courses as needed in both the first and second year curricula, typically teaching one-to-two classes per semester. The Associate Director meets regularly with students to provide individualized instruction and feedback on reading cases, legal writing, legal analysis, and other skills required to succeed in law school and on the bar exam. In conjunction with the Office of the Registrar and the Assistant Dean of Students and Academic Success, the Associate Director of Academic Success will also oversee the law school’s academic accommodations process, including determination of requests and the preparation of accommodation plans. The Associate Director develops and presents academic success and bar support workshops, specialized materials, and other programs, including pre-matriculation and summer bar support programming. The Associate Director helps collect, analyze, and interpret both hard and narrative data relating to students’ pre-law school academic background, law school performance, and bar passage. The Associate Director is expected to research and keep abreast of latest developments in ASP pedagogy, learning theories, technologies, and scholastic literature. The Associate Director helps track and report information regarding bar passage. As a courtesy member of the faculty, the Associate Director serves on faculty committees where appropriate and assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assists Assistant Dean of Students and Academic Success in developing and administering the Academic Support and Bar Strategies Programs, including a LW3 course each Fall geared towards at-risk 2L students. This also includes organizing and presenting workshops and programs for students and faculty and keeping ahead of the latest developments in learning theory and technology.
  • Teaches legal writing courses as needed.
  • Meets individually with students and provides feedback and guidance on areas such as analytical writing skills, time management, and other skills that assist law students in achieving a high level of academic performance.
  • Oversees the Law School’s accommodation process, including receiving student requests, organizing a committee for review of requests, and drafting accommodation letters.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • JD
  • Prior or current admission to a state bar
  • 3-5 years of professional legal experience
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, with special aptitude for patience and positive motivation
  • Must have knowledge of law school curriculum and academic success principles and techniques
  • Must have knowledge of legal writing pedagogy
  • Ability to effectively manage and prioritize multiple competing projects
  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Westlaw
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 2+ years experience with law school academic and/or bar support or legal writing preferred
  • Some teaching experience preferred
  • Counseling background preferred but not necessary
  • Expertise in learning technology and legal technology preferred
