Position Overview

The Associate Director KU Writing Center supports the University Academic Support Centers (UASC) leadership in the ongoing development of the Writing Center and the culture of writing at the University of Kansas by managing most daily operations of the Writing Center and ensuring that the writing center services run efficiently. The Associate Director is tasked with the management and implementation of the undergraduate writing consulting services and the ongoing supervision and professional education of student writing consultants, and also supervises the Assistant Director, Graduate Writing and Support. In addition, the Associate Director serves on the Leadership Team for the University Academic Support Centers. This position reports to the Sr. Associate Director of the University Academic Support Centers.

Unit Overview:

The KU Writing Center offers programs and services to students, faculty, and staff across writing levels and disciplines. At the University of Kansas, trained graduate and undergraduate students provide writing consultation across multiple campus locations. The Writing Center is a part of the University Academic Support Centers (UASC), a comprehensive student support program designed to provide resources to strengthen the academic skills and written communication of students and support the University’s commitment to the academic success and holistic development of students. University Academic Support Centers is a department within Academic Success.

  • Provides leadership and day-to-day management for the KU Writing Center. Supervises Writing Center professional staff and graduate coordinators. Assists the Sr. Associate Director with the Writing Center budget. Administers Writing Center schedule and appointment system, including maintaining and troubleshooting WCOnline. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required.

  • Manages undergraduate writing consulting services, including the recruiting, hiring, training, supervising, and educating of a cohort of 25 undergraduate student consultants during fall, spring, and summer sessions. Oversees consultant training and professional development programs with the Assistant Director, Graduate Writing and Support, including occasional offerings of ENGL 400 (Teaching & Tutoring Writing). Collaborates with UASC staff on additional training opportunities.

  • Initiates and coordinates activities to build and strengthen relationships with faculty and academic staff across the Lawrence and Edwards campuses. Collaborates with other offices on campus that provide instructional support, such as the Center for Teaching Excellence and Center for Faculty Development and Mentoring. Serves on committees within Academic Success and other units. Collaborates with writing support across campus to advocate for student writers and promote a culture of writing at KU.

  • Assists the Sr. Associate Director with the ongoing assessment of student needs, including the development and implementation of Writing Center programs to meet identified needs, and the assessment of program outcomes with a view towards continual improvement.

  • Monitors current trends, developments, and high impact practices in writing centers regionally and nationally through involvement in organizations and other professional development activities.

Position Requirements

  • This position requires working on-site.
  • This position requires occasional evening and weekend work hours.

  • Required Qualifications

    • Master’s degree in the Humanities, TESOL, Education, or related discipline.
    • Minimum two years’ full-time experience in a student writing center setting in higher education.
    • Excellent written communication skills as evidenced by application materials. 
    • Experience working with diverse populations, including students, faculty, and staff.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Terminal degree in the Humanities, Education, TESOL, or related discipline. 
    • Experience teaching writing, composition, TESOL, or other relevant courses.
    • One-year administrative experience in the supervision and evaluation of professional, undergraduate, and graduate student employees.
    • Experience in developing and implementing writing center assessment tools.
    • Excellent oral communication skills as demonstrated through interview.
