About the Museum: The Jane Addams Hull-House Museum (JAHHM) is Chicago's dynamic monument to democracy. The museum draws on the legacy of social reformer Jane Addams, the first American woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, and her colleagues whose work changed the lives of their immigrant neighbors as well as national and international public policy. The museum preserves and develops the original Hull-House site for the interpretation and continuation of the historic settlement house vision, linking research, education, and social engagement. The museum is located in two of the original settlement house buildings - the Hull Home, a National Historic Landmark; and the Residents' Dining Hall, a beautiful Arts and Crafts building that has welcomed some of the world's most important thinkers, artists, and activists.
Job Summary
Reporting to the Director of the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum, the Associate Director is responsible for providing leadership and direction in exhibitions, interpretation, and programming; overseeing operations to ensure programs are effectively conceived, promoted, staffed and funded; and providing accountability criteria to demonstrate overall institutional goals are maintained. The Associate Director is responsible for initiating and overseeing collaborations with UIC students, faculty, and staff; and ensuring that the resources of the museum are made available to the faculty and students in meaningful and innovative ways. Maintains relationships with university partners and funding organizations, ensures reporting criteria are met.
Job Responsibilities
Manages and develops the interpretive function of the museum: oversees exhibitions, tours and programs; evaluates current scholarship related to Hull-House and its residents for inclusion in museum programming, and ensures cohesion among the museum's departments.
Manages the museum's role in the Museum and Exhibition Studies program as a teaching museum by creating opportunities for coursework and student practicums within the museum, with the option of teaching one class per year in the Museum and Exhibition Studies program.
Initiate, maintain, and oversee campus collaborations, including outreach programs, faculty and student research, and interdisciplinary teaching.
Conducts and supervises research in support of the museum's mission. Design and lead seminars and workshops for on campus and off-campus groups.
Prioritizes and anticipates the museum's needs, advocates for resources on behalf of the museum, and makes recommendations to allocate internal resources.
Develops and prepares grant proposals for both ongoing activities and special projects. Supervises the museum's grant process. Writes and/or approve grant narratives and budgets, submit grants to UIC's Office of Research Services and to granting organizations, and maintain relationships with grant funders.
Participates in the formulation of policies related to the activities of the museum involving tours, access to and use of the museum and Residents' Dining Hall by on-campus and off-campus groups, and revenue-generating activities within UIC's and the U of I's existing policies.
Provides professional reports, analyses, data and information for administrative purposes and maintains awareness of current practices and trends within the museum field.
Provides professional expertise to maintain and enhance both the professional knowledge related to museum work and public history and the contacts with museum and public history professionals in the Chicago area, nationally, and internationally. Represents the museum at professional association conferences and other venues.
Represents the museum on campus and community committees. Plan, assign and review work of staff to ensure that group objectives are met. Hire, train, develop and manage staff to ensure that a qualified staff exists to meet group objectives.
Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
Qualifications
Master's degree in Arts Administration, Education, Museum Studies, History or related discipline required.
Three years' experience in museum administration, programming, education, or exhibitions required.
Demonstrated knowledge of Progressive Era history. Teaching experience strongly preferred.
Candidate must be able to maneuver through narrow passageways, climb up/down stairs and move heavy collections objects with assistance.
