Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Associate Director provides expertise and leadership for the Center for Southeast North Carolina Archives and History, one of five major functional divisions in the University of North Carolina Wilmington’s Randall Library. The Center’s collections are composed of Government Information, Special Collections, and University Archives, and its goal is to connect the people and communities of Southeast North Carolina to the sources of their history and culture by collecting and digitizing materials, providing access to those materials, educating the campus and broader region about that history and culture, encouraging and engaging scholarship on the region, and supporting and partnering with regional cultural heritage groups. This position serves as a member of Randall Library’s Senior Leadership Team (SLT), responsible for the leadership and strategic direction of the library and its services, spaces, and resources.
This is a 12-month, renewable, non-tenure track special faculty position reporting to the Dean of Randall Library.
Upon initial appointment, the Associate Director for Library Specialized Collections / Director of the Center for Southeast North Carolina Archives and History (CSENCAH) provides vision and strategic direction for a team of professional librarians, archivists, and staff in strengthening the discovery, visibility, accessibility, and impact of the Center’s distinctive archival collections and will play a critical leadership role in the growth of the collection and its engagement throughout the Southeast North Carolina community.
Responsibilities specific to Center leadership:
  • Develops mission-oriented digital and collections strategies that reflect current best practices and for initiating services and programs that meet the needs of our users and stakeholders
  • Develops and aligns departmental strategic plans with overall Library and University plans; leads the plan implementation in order to assess and continuously improve the Center’s collections and services
  • Leads efforts to identify and acquire new collections/materials or engage in partnerships with community members or community organizations for greater access to materials
  • Engages in fundraising with private donors and with grant-writing for foundation or public funds.

In addition, Associate Directors have the following key responsibilities:
  • Oversees overall operations of the Center, including directly or indirectly supervising, supporting, guiding, and evaluating 6 – 8 full-time employees (both faculty and staff)
  • Establishes strategic goals and objectives for the Center and develops, evaluates, and continually improves programs and services.
  • Fosters flexible, collaborative work environments and strong teams, encouraging staff to engage in creative initiatives and partnerships to meet student and faculty needs
  • Provides strong leadership and demonstrated commitment to the mission, vision, values, of Randall Library
  • Analyzes, discusses, plans, and implements the strategic direction of Randall Library, including the development of new services, resources, and spaces
  • Develops annual budgets and approves large and/or strategic expenditures
  • Identifies gaps in services and develops staffing plans and new positions
  • Works collaboratively to make ongoing decisions about library operations
  • Participates in the development, implementation, review and revision of Library policies, procedures, and services

As a library faculty member, this position will:
  • Provides in-person and on-call research help during scheduled help desk shifts, providing individual research assistance in person, by phone, email, and chat
  • Participates in university and professional activities, including research, conference presentations, publications, service, and other evidence of scholarly activity
  • Keeps current with developments in librarianship, particularly in areas related to the division’s foci

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  • A master’s degree in library, information, or archival sciences from an ALA-accredited institution, or an equivalent advanced degree & relevant experience in academic archives or special collections
  • Five years of increasingly responsible, professional (post-graduate), supervisory work experience in academic special collections administration and leadership, staff supervision and evaluation, collection development, research services, and programming and outreach
  • Candidates should have working knowledge of appropriate technologies for managing, processing, digitizing, and making discoverable primary sources and other unique materials
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
  • Experience managing budgets; strong project management experience; and evidence of successful donor relations, and/or grant-writing experience
  • Familiarity with intellectual property issues related to special collections and archives
  • Experience w/professional standards, practices, and systems used for special collections and/or archival records processing, management, preservation, conservation, cataloging, discovery, and access
  • Evidence of a strong and inclusive user service philosophy, and commitment to continuous improvement and innovation.
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively in the community and with community agencies to develop partnerships for collections access and/or to acquire new collections relevant to the department’s collection scope
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with faculty and community leaders to plan and implement symposia, lectures, exhibitions, and scholarly discussions that highlight special collections, the research use of special collections, and the curricular and scholarly use of special collections and primary source material
  • Demonstrated knowledge of emerging practices, standards, and trends in academic librarianship, particularly in areas related to the division’s foci
  • Strong leadership skills, including demonstrated analytical and decision-making skills
  • Effective interpersonal, oral, written, and virtual communication skills using a variety of media and technologies
  • Demonstrated initiative and flexibility, as well as the ability to adapt to and work creatively in a rapidly changing environment

The Center for Southeast North Carolina Archives and History acquires, manages and preserves a wide variety of both primary source and specialized materials within Randall Library within the divisions of University Archives, Special Collections and Government Information. The Center provides access to these materials for undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and visiting scholars. The Center for Southeast North Carolina Archives and History also coordinates exhibits and public programs and also facilitates reference and instruction services using these materials.
