Position Focus:

Reporting to the Law Librarian, the Associate Director for Operations is a vital member of the Law Library’s leadership team whose principal duties encompass library operations, services, outreach, and engagement responsibilities. The Associate Director for Operations assists with the planning and monitoring of Law Library programs and services, provides operational project management under the direction of the Law Librarian, and works closely with members of the law library leadership team to execute the library’s strategic goals. The Associate Director for Operations oversees the daily operations of the law library administrative office and supervises the work of two support staff. The Lillian Goldman Law Library participates in the Yale University Library promotion and ranking process. Essential Duties

1. Provides direction and support for specified library projects and initiatives. Creates, maintains, and tracks project goals, budgets, and timelines.  2. Schedules, coordinates, and documents project meetings. Prepares periodic project status reports.
3. Participates in budget, space, and strategic planning for the Law Library, in conjunction with the Law Librarian and members of the Law Library Leadership team. 4. Facilitates the coordination and submission of statistical reports. 5. Oversees the compilation and production of the Law Library annual report and other external library communications.  6. Oversees and coordinates the promotion of library programs and outreach services, including, library orientation, book talks, speaker presentations, and exhibits.  7. As a member of the Law Library Leadership team, participates actively in strategic, budget and day to day planning. 8. Supervises the work of two administrative support staff 9. Assists the Law Librarian with library recruitment and other personnel processes. 10. Supports the Law Library's relations with the Law School, the University and University Libraries, library consortia and professional organizations. 11. Participates in the development of emergency and disaster preparedness plans. 12. Participates with other librarians in legal research instruction to first-year students in collaboration with legal writing faculty. May teach advanced research courses depending on interest. 13. Participates in the provision of extensive reference and research services to the law school and university communities in Anglo-American, international, and foreign law, and related topics, both in person and virtually. 14. Participates in the faculty liaison program and scholarly services support 15. Participates in collection development activities


Required Education and Experience

Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent accredited degree. J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school.  Five or more years working in an academic law library, including research support, instructional services, outreach, and engagement.  Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience leading teams and supervising staff.

Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and direction in a law library. A commitment to the vital role libraries play in supporting legal scholarship and an understanding of current trends in legal education and law libraries. 


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to give and receive feedback, consult appropriately, and make independent decisions. 


Required Skill/Ability 3:

Demonstrated project management ability, including the ability to work independently and as a member of a team. 


Required Skill/Ability 4:

Demonstrated ability to plan and monitor budgets. 


Required Skill/Ability 5:

Demonstrated ability to forge impactful partnerships and support the Law Librarys relations within the Law School, the University, library consortia and professional organizations. Strong record of active engagement in the library profession, demonstrating teamwork, leadership, and service.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Eight years of progressively responsible experience, five of which should be in a supervisory leadership role in an academic law library, research library or similar institution or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
