The Finance and Operational Analytics Team is an integral element of the Business Services and Organizational Excellence team and serves to create, maintain, and continuously improve the William & Mary physical environment to enable excellence in teaching, research, and public service.
Position Summary
The Associate Director for Capital Accounting oversees and manages project budgets, financial reporting, reconciliations, and analysis of the Capital Outlay program as a primary responsibility. Reporting to the Director of Fiscal Operations, the Associate Director also directs transactional operations, internal controls, regulatory compliance, and endowment accounting.
In collaboration with the Director, the Associate Director manages Facilities Management fiscal operations to align with the Business Affairs Mission and relevant regulations. They are responsible for providing guidance and timely financial reports to various stakeholders, including campus senior leaders such as the Executive Vice President, Associate Vice President for Business Affairs, Assistant Vice President of Finance & Operational Analytics, and Internal Audit.
This position assists in managing day-to-day business operations related to Facilities Management and Business Affairs, ensuring compliance with University, State, and Federal regulations, and donor intent; while continuously assessing efficiency and industry best practices. They maintain credibility through excellent customer relationship skills amidst transaction scrutiny and are responsible for $500+ million in project budgets and execution of Capital Accounting. The Associate Director also oversees the Financial Project Controls Analyst.
Conditions of Employment
  • Work is performed with considerable latitude and independence. The incumbent is expected to exercise initiative in anticipating financial and budgetary issues, identify potential solutions and prioritize workload to accomplish the assigned tasks in time to meet suspense dates.
  • This position is exempt from overtime and may be required to work additional hours beyond the typical work week as needed to meet the business needs of the operation.
  • This position has been designated as essential to the operation of the department and will require reporting to work when the University is officially closed and is subject to additional hours and may be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, or finance or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
  • Extensive, progressive experience in financial management.
  • Experience with Capital Outlay financial reporting, and budget development.
  • In-depth knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Comprehensive experience with administrative enterprise systems. (ERP)
  • Problem-solving skills, excellent communication, and the ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Managerial/supervisory experience including personnel management.
  • Advanced degree in a related field, and/or certification or licensure in a financial field (CPA, CMA).
  • Experience in Banner enterprise system including specific experience in areas of position responsibility.
  • Knowledge of the Commonwealth of Virginia’s business processes and systems.
  • Experience in Higher Education or in governmental organizations.
