Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Associate Director for Administration is part of a collaborative School of Nursing (SON) Leadership Team. Reporting to the Director of SON and Irwin Belk Distinguished Professor, the Associate Director serves as the primary liaison to the College’s Business Core Service Team and the Academic Affairs Operations Team. The Associate Director for Administration serves as a key counselor to the School Director and provides school-level leadership, management, and oversight of the general administrative operation of the SON. The School of Nursing operations include human resources, budget planning, marketing, teaching and learning software, technology contracts, and facilities. The Associate Director ensures operational effectiveness that will allow the School to grow and fulfill its mission.
This position is open to those who qualify as one the following ranks and can be credentialed at the appointed rank in the School of Nursing:
  • Tenured Professor
  • Tenured Associate Professor
  • Clinical Professor
  • Clinical Associate Professor
  • Clinical Assistant Professor


Rank appointment is dependent on education and qualifications relative to the university, college, and school standards and will be determined by academic leadership in accordance with faculty handbook, policies, and procedures. Return to faculty rights will be commensurate with assigned rank.
This position will be expected to relocate to North Carolina and maintain a campus presence as part of the School of Nursing faculty.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Qualifications must include a doctoral degree in either nursing or a related field. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Preference will be given to those who possess the following:
  • 2 years of successful administrative experience in an academic unit
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to build strong relationships with internal and external constituents
  • Specific experience with the administration of academic degree programs, faculty and staff development within an academic unit, and/or general administration of an academic unit
  • Experience with the development and management of new programs/initiatives
  • Experience championing new initiatives with faculty and staff
  • Experience working across and collaborating with an administrative leadership team

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The School of Nursing (SON) within the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) has an outstanding legacy of serving the people of southeastern North Carolina through education, scholarship, and service. The SON is dedicated to excellence in the development of healthcare professionals through in-depth education, professional partnerships, applied research, regional engagement, and community outreach and impact. The SON is a National League of Nursing Center of Excellence in Nursing Education, specifically in the area of promoting the pedagogical expertise of faculty. The SON is located in McNeill Hall, a state-of-the-art facility that includes offices, classrooms, a large lecture hall, computer laboratories, student success areas and learning commons, and the Simulation Learning Center. The Simulation Learning Center uses high, medium, and low-fidelity human patient simulators as teaching and learning tools for nursing education. Through the use of simulation, we strive to create a realistic environment and a powerful learning experience that promotes the cognitive, affective, physical, and social development of the student as well as the incorporation of inter-professional collaborative experiences for students across the degree programs in the College.

Over 2,500 undergraduate and nearly 600 graduate students are enrolled in programs within the SON. The SON has over 80 full-time faculty and employs over 60 part-time faculty per semester.
College/School Information
The College of Health and Human Services was created in July 2010 to provide UNCW with a new mechanism to link and focus its health-related research, professional continuing education, and health knowledge dissemination and application. In the formative stage of development, the CHHS is currently home to three professional schools: School of Health and Applied Human Sciences, School of Nursing, and School of Social Work.
