Job Description

The Associate Director - Explore Advising & Student Success position will be housed with Explore, a program designed to empower learners to design their journey at ASU by identifying strengths, interests, and skills to connect to their goals after graduation. Learners in the Explore program are in the essential stage of exploring interests, values, strengths, and long-term goals as they research and make decisions around their ASU journey and design possible futures for themselves. An important step in this design process is choosing a major that offers educational experiences and knowledge that aligns with the interests and goals of the student.

Under the direct supervision of the Program Director-Explore, the Associate Director - Explore Advising & Student Success will serve on the Explore program leadership team charged with strategizing, planning, and executing the overall strategic oversight and day-to-day operations of student support services inclusive of student recruitment, academic and career advising, and student success (engagement, communication & retention) of the Explore program.

This role is pivotal in exhibiting strategic ways of thinking further to integrate services and support through the Explore student experience. This role will work closely with department and college leadership, faculty, and staff in Explore.

The Associate Director - Explore Advising & Student Success also plays a critical role in the Work+ Program, which is designed to prepare student-employees for their future professional careers. As a key participant in the Work+ Program, the Assistant Director will serve as a career guide and mentor to the working learner(s) they have been assigned to supervise. Additionally, the Assistant Director will provide working learners with opportunities to build valuable work skills and facilitate professional development.

Salary Range

$62,500 - $64,000 per year; DOE


Essential Duties

  • Lead the design and implementation of academic and career advising services to provide triaged care that focuses on student success to support students and improve retention rate in the Explore program
  • Oversee all initiatives, efforts, and programs related to admissions and recruitment. This is inclusive of the design and execution of efforts, including communication and initiatives on the student experience from admissions to the first day of classes
  • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate staff and working learners by creating an organizational structure for on-boarding, training, and professional development
  • Oversee and guide initiatives related to escalated student issues, inclusive of but not limited to withdrawal requests, petitions, and student care process
  • Lead the strategic efforts to incorporate career advising in academic advising services
  • Lead the gathering and assessing of data to conduct high-level analysis to report trends and to forecast in the design of long and short-term goals pertaining to student support services. 
  • Communicate and align internal stakeholders on forecast assumptions, qualifying results based on data, and be able to contribute to new and existing program planning and development. 
  • Co-develop, maintain, and implement college policies and procedures regarding advising, retention, or other academic support efforts. 
  • Serve on the Explore leadership team to contribute to the strategic vision and direction of the Explore program. 
  • Oversee the planning and execution of co-curriculum engagement opportunities aligned with program vision and objectives in addition to university goals and expectations. 
  • Liaise with internal and external partners to plan and/or attend other events or meetings related to an increase in student enrollment, retention, and/or success
  • Plan and review activities and operations of the department to ensure the achievement of objectives and goals consistent with the mission of the University College
  • Contribute to the greater Work+Learn team and engage in efforts and opportunities across the Work+Learn portfolio
  • Work independently and as a part of the University College team by exercising professional judgment to serve as a knowledgeable resource with respect to ASU policy and procedures to ensure accurate output and processing
  • Work on special projects and other duties as assigned by the supervisor. 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND seven (7) years of related administrative experience, which includes four (4) years of supervisory experience; OR, Eleven (11) years of related administrative experience, which includes four (4) years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in creating and implementing strategic vision and goals for a program/initiative, including those that pertain to retention and persistence for undergraduate students, that meet the needs of students, and/or address challenges
  • Experience in applying student development/student learning theories and/or academic and/or career advising knowledge into student support services
  • Experience in working with and/or engaging students at multiple stages of the student experience (i.e. recruitment/admissions, matriculation, and retention)
  • Experience in developing a strategy for overall program efficiency and effectiveness
  • Experience gathering, analyzing, and reporting on data to achieve identified goals and objectives
  • Experience in PeopleSoft, Salesforce, social media, analytic dashboards, and Google Suite (or equivalent systems)
  • Experience in effectively managing, supervising, coaching, and evaluating professional and student staff in an academic setting
  • Experience being innovative and strategic as it relates to leading a unit/organization
  • Evidence of effective communication skills
  • Experience in using problem-solving and decision-making skills to establish and manage priorities
  • Experience in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse, which requires standing for varying lengths of time and walking moderate distances to perform work.
  • Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 25 pounds.
  • Regular activities require the ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to, computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone, and associated computer/technology peripherals.
  • Expected to be responsive to customers, engaged in work production, resourceful, flexible, and respectful of others.
  • May require some weekend and evening hours.
