Position Summary

The mission of the Office of Educational Opportunity Programs and Ethnic Affairs is to serve students from low-income backgrounds and historically underserved communities by providing innovative programs and services that facilitate the successful recruitment, retention, and development of scholars and leaders as they persist toward a university degree. 

Division of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity 

The Division works proactively to address systemic inequities through professional learning, community building, advocacy, policy recommendations, and organizational structures while facilitating an integrated vision and shared responsibility for prioritizing and advancing institutional goals. EOP assists students in achieving academic success and working through educational, psychological, social, and economic challenges through their college experience by providing a comprehensive program of support services. EOP also supports students who are former foster youth, wards of the court, under legal guardianship, or unaccompanied youth through the Guardian Scholars Program. In addition, EOP supports undocumented students and allies.

Under the general direction of the Director of EOP/Ethnic Affairs, the Associate Director of EOP is responsible for managing student outreach, recruitment, admission, transition, and enrollment of EOP and Guardian Scholars (GS) students. The position will develop, implement and assess programs to assist students in their transition from high school or community college to San Diego State University, EOP, and GS. The position serves as a liaison with the San Diego Black/African American, AAPI, and Latinx community to provide resources that would help prospective students enter SDSU. In addition, this position is a liaison with other CSU EOP transitional programs; community college EOPS and CalWORKs programs; and pre-college programs such as TRIO and GEARUP.

The Associate Director is also responsible for managing an innovative, broad-based, and effective program of educational equity access initiatives and communication between the University and the entities representing potential future applicants to SDSU/EOP/GS. The Associate Director will develop and implement a coordinated and comprehensive student-access program for students who are from low income, traditionally underrepresented, and/or traditionally disadvantaged backgrounds, which includes activities that address all aspects of the undergraduate student application and admission process for these students in line with the strategic goals of SDSU/EOP/GS. 

The Associate Director serves as a representative of the University in educational equity access-related assignments as required and will also work closely with other University departments to facilitate public relations, access, and college readiness services to prospective students. The incumbent develops new and maintains strong existing collaborations with community college and high school counselors to support local student access to the university and EOP, including the development of liaisons, workshops, conferences.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base) benefits-eligible, at-will position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

Candidate Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be well-versed in college admissions, outreach, and retention practices. The successful candidate should possess strong analytical and organizational skills and be able to lead the department in the efficient and effective use of technology related to admission (e.g., Hobsons, enrollment management systems, imaging technology, etc.).  They will have extensive experience developing and presenting recruitment reports and analyses, annual reports, and assessment plans. They will have strong leadership skills that includes the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences including prospective students and their parents; school counselors, teachers, and administrators; alumni and friends of the university; faculty, staff, and administrators. The successful candidate must possess the ability and willingness to travel to represent the university at recruitment events, fairs, professional meetings as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree from a regionally accredited university in Student Affairs, Higher Education, Educational Leadership, Counseling, or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Minimum of three years of experience working with students from low income, traditionally underrepresented, and/or traditionally disadvantaged backgrounds

  • Minimum of three years of direct experience in admissions, recruitment, and/or outreach

  • Strategic recruitment expertise

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Experience planning, developing and implementing university recruitment programs and events. 

  • Well-versed in regards to college admission, outreach, and retention practices. The successful  candidate should possess strong analytical and organizational skills and be able to lead the  department in the efficient and effective use of technology related to admission

  • Strong professional development skill sets (e.g., affiliations and involvement with state, regional, and/or national organizations (e.g., NASPA, ACPA, AACRAO, and/or related regional or state associations.

  • Track record applying an equity-minded lens

  • Demonstrated ability to apply power, privilege, and inequity concepts to create safe working environments for minoritized students, faculty, and staff.

  • Experience participating in and leading movement(s) to create meaningful systemic change.

  • Ability to understand and navigate a dynamic campus culture.

  • Knowledge and experience working with diverse student populations including race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, socioeconomic status, and other forms of salient identities.

  • Competency in cross-cultural communication.

  • Possesses leadership qualities such as proactiveness, vision, being a self-starter, positivity, and creativity. 

  • Ability to facilitate difficult dialogues, effectively listen to all points of view and build consensus.

  • Demonstrated success working on teams and supporting colleagues on collaborative initiatives.

SDSU COVID-19 Vaccine Policy
In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, the COVID-19 vaccine will be required for all students, faculty, and staff in order to access campus.  An individual is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their second dose of a two-shot vaccine or two weeks after the first dose of a single-shot vaccine. 

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university’s secure online health portal prior to beginning work.  Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to complete regular COVID-19 testing.
