Reporting to the Senior Associate Director of Donor Relations, the Associate Director, Donor Relations conceptualizes and executes inspiring and informative stewardship reports and activities for transformational donors. In so doing, the Associate Director informs individual donors about gift use and communicates the impact of their support, working closely with frontline fundraisers and partnering on "deliverables" with senior administrators and faculty across the University.

  • Conceptualizes and plans tailored annual and longer-term stewardship strategies for a portfolio of approximately 25 donors. These strategies will leverage both understanding of donor engagement strategies and in-depth knowledge of individuals' giving and the associated areas of support, which could range from facilities projects to newly-established academic centers to other research and programmatic initiatives.
  • Collaborate with frontline fundraisers and campus partners to ensure that strategies align with broader engagement and stewardship plans, as well as reflecting up-to-date information about campus initiatives.
  • For each assigned donor, manages and ensures quality control for all aspects of donor acknowledgment, recognition, and reporting, and, in close collaboration with campus partners, monitors financial and legal compliance with terms of gifts.
  • Executes deliverables for each personalized stewardship plan, including researching and writing stewardship reports and other correspondence that provide appropriate updates on progress to program goals or objectives; responding to donor questions or sharing timely updates between scheduled reports; identifying opportunities for meetings to build strong donor relationships with beneficiaries of support; and seeking creative opportunities for engagement beyond reports to illustrate the impact of their support.
  • To ensure more effective stewardship, develops strong relationships with donors, philanthropic advisors, family foundation staffs, and other individuals associated with gifts to Princeton.
  • Meets with donors and other individuals, as appropriate or requested; staffs senior University leadership for stewardship calls and meetings with donors; effectively represents Princeton and communicates its mission, both verbally and in writing, to a variety of constituencies, including transformational donors.
  • With the Director and colleagues in Donor Relations, helps to identify ways to continually enhance Donor Relations program, allowing Princeton's initiatives and practices to be innovative, efficient, and at the forefront of trends and industry practices; execute other tasks related to the stewardship function in the Office of Development as requested by the Director of Donor Relations.


 

  • Bachelor's degree and minimum of five years strongly related experience.
  • Superior writing, editing, analytical, and oral communication skills including the ability to collect, review, synthesize, and present information and to communicate effectively with diverse groups and build collaborative relationships.
  • Proven ability to develop and foster relationships with people at all levels of an organization, and to collaborate and influence at a high level. Evidence of self-motivation and the ability to work both independently and in teams, with high personal standards representative of Princeton’s commitment to excellence.
  • Strong project management skills necessary to set and monitor progress against goals, engage stakeholders, develop plans and timelines, and to measure success toward goals.
  • Ability to respond quickly to changing business needs and priorities and to handle multiple projects simultaneously. Ability to produce high-quality and compelling work product under tight deadlines and work with a high degree of flexibility in a highly-collaborative, fast-paced, goal-oriented environment. Willingness to search out answers, and ability to recognize when others need to be involved in activities or decisions.
  • Discretion, good judgment; a strong appreciation for special needs associated with sensitive data and commitment to keep confidential all data related to Princeton and its alumni and donors.
  • The highest standards of professionalism and performance as evidenced by collaborative teamwork, initiative, critical thinking, good judgment, consistency of output, timeliness and follow-through.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, and travel as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with natural sciences, computer and data sciences, and other disciplines in STEM fields, and a demonstrated ability to translate scholarly and research materials into more accessible language.
  • Familiarity with Princeton University and its mission, as well as the ability to fully articulate it to donors and volunteers
