Associate Director of Career Services – MR09

College of Law

 

The University of Tennessee College of Law invites applications for the position of Associate Director of Career Services. This position is a senior level individual that possesses specialized expertise in the planning, management, supervision of staff, and operation of the College of Law Career Center. A key focus, and significant aspect, of this position is to analyze and evaluate courses of action, including the creation and implementation of strategic decisions and plans. This position devotes significant time to create, develop, manage, and advance strategic relationships with a wide and diverse constituency, both on and off campus. This position also provides oversight for, and facilitates, broad programs and/or activities with some defined authority.  This position provides professional counseling and advice to law students, alumni, and others. This position provides direction and guidance to designated personnel and supervises others. This position provides oversight for numerous technological systems (for example, Symplicity and the Career Center page on the UTK Law Portal) and facilitates use by students, staff, faculty, and alumni. This position also participates on departmental and/or interdepartmental committees to address problems and facilitate information exchange about programs, key metrics, strategic goals, etc. And, this position travels extensively and conducts a great deal of work outside of the Career Center office, which involves extensive independent thinking, problem solving, and relationship building with some of the college’s most important constituencies.

 

 

Responsibilities of the Associate Director of Career Services include but are not limited to:

 

·      Develops, manages, and advances strategic relationships with campus constituencies, the external community, alumni, and employers.

·      Independently identifying, establishing, and maintaining strategic relationships with current and prospective employers to encourage the hiring of students and graduates.

·      Planning and executing travel within the state and nationwide, with particular emphasis on the regional markets identified as targets for students and graduates and ensuring financial compliance with the University travel regulations.

·      Attending national, regional, and local conferences, bar association events, and other similar activities and events to establish and advance strategic relationships.

·      Developing and assisting Director in analyzing and implementing strategic plans for the unit based on interpretation of College and institutional policies and goals.

·      Assisting communications professionals on Career Center materials, including timing and content.

·      Independently making and updating presentations annually.

·      Providing oversight for other professional employees of the unit.

·      Independently counseling and directing clients in the development and implementation of short- and long-term career goals and job search strategies on an individual basis.

·      Conducting mock interviews.

·      Making direct referrals between students/alumni and employers specific to each groups’ preferences and needs.

·      Assisting with formal recruitment programs, including on-campus interviews, off-campus job fairs, job listings, and resume forwarding opportunities.

 

 



Qualifications

 

Required Experience and Abilities

 

Candidates are required to have a Juris Doctor, and at least 7 years of relevant experience (three of which may be met by completion of law school).

 

The Associate Director must have:

 

-       Strong oral and written communication skills

-       Organizational skills; management/supervisory skills

-       Excellent public speaking skills

-       Database design/management knowledge

-       Customer service, marketing, and client/employer development skills

-       Knowledge and experience using Microsoft Office Suite

-       Knowledge of a variety of legal markets and employment settings

-       The ability to be licensed to practice law in any jurisdiction within the United States

 

Skills that are preferred, but not required:

 

-       Experience in public interest and/or government work

-       Experience in higher education

-       Experience in advising/counseling students/junior employees

-       Supervisory experience
