Associate Director, Cities, Housing, and Society Lab (CHSL) and the Stanford Initiative for Business, Taxation, and Society (SIBTS)

Updated: 17 days ago
Location: Stanford, CALIFORNIA

Stanford's Graduate School of Business (GSB) has built a global reputation based on its immersive and innovative management programs. We provide students with a transformative leadership experience, pushing the boundaries of knowledge with faculty research, and offering a portfolio of entrepreneurial and non-degree programs that deliver global impact like no other. We are committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in service of our mission of developing innovative, principled, and insightful leaders who change lives, change organizations, and change the world. We invite you to be part of this mission. As part of the GSB Research Hub, the Stanford GSB Library engages with faculty members, researchers, and students across the lifecycle of research, teaching, and scholarship.

This position services two labs within the Research Hub at the Stanford Graduate School of Business: the Cities, Housing, and Society Lab and the Stanford Initiative for Business, Taxation, and Society. The Associate Director will work with both research groups to manage their portfolio of research projects with time equally divided between the two groups. The Associate Director reports operationally to the faculty directors, and administratively to the Director, Research Operations in the GSB Research Hub. An ideal candidate will have research experience related to the labs’ interests allowing the candidate to discuss each labs’ research, communicate with partners, write funding proposals, and manage lab researchers. As the labs’ research spans many areas, the candidate does not need to be an expert in all areas but must be curious and able to learn about research in multiple disciplines.

The Cities, Housing, and Society Lab investigates how geographic places labor markets, and public policy influence households’ economic lives and inequality. They combine public and private sector administrative data with statistical and economic tools to improve the productivity and quality of life across all types of communities and their residents. The lab brings together a diverse set of collaborators across academia, industry, and government, along with unique data sources from both the public and private sector to tackle key policy issues facing cities today. Topics studied include affordable housing policy, place-based policies, spatial inequality, local public finance, and local labor economics.

The Stanford Initiative for Business, Taxation, and Society conducts cross-disciplinary tax research to better inform practice, policy, and academia. They conduct cutting edge research using administrative data, often in partnership with revenue authorities, to improve our understanding of how business responded to taxation and how these responses impact economic activity and inequality. Additionally, they grow and develop the next generation of tax scholars by combining PhD students, post-doctoral scholars, pre-doctoral fellows, and visiting scholars from around the world to discuss and conduct research.

Note: This is a two-year, fixed-term position and will work a hybrid schedule requiring availability two days per week or an equivalent time monthly on-site (as determined by the faculty directors).
