Associate Director & Chief Scientific Officer

General Description:

Texas A&M AgriLife Research is seeking an outstanding, innovative, and dynamic Associate Director & Chief Scientific Officer with a proven record of visionary leadership and management. The incumbent will also serve as Associate Dean of Research for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. This will be a 12- month position administratively located in College Station, Texas that will provide the successful candidate the opportunity to direct and enhance the research mission of the agency and that of its statewide, national, and international partners.

Position Responsibilities include providing leadership to the following areas:

  • Faculty Affairs and Professional Development

  • Grant and Contract Reviews and Approvals

  • Seed Funding Programs/Exceptional Items

  • Provide Strategic Support to all Research & Extension Centers and Departments in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the School of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences

  • Provide Support to Texas A&M AgriLife Research College Station Based Core Facilities, Centers, and Institutes

  • Liaison with the School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, TAMU Division of Research and TAMUS VC for Research

  • Develop Partnerships/Collaborations with Texas A&M System Universities

  • Intellectual Property Management

  • Agency Representative to Commodity Boards, Producer Associations, Regional/National Committees

  • Expected to serve on unit, department, agency, and university committees as appropriate.

  • Travel as needed to visit Research & Extension Centers or to participate in statewide, national, or international meetings.

  • Other Duties as Assigned

Administrative Relationships:

The position reports to the Director of Texas A&M AgriLife Research in College Station.

Qualifications: 

  • Ph.D. in subject matter area related to mission and research conducted by Texas A&M AgriLife Research.

  • Qualifications necessary for hire at the rank Professor

  • Proven track-record of securing external funding and producing high-quality scholarly publications.

  • Commitment to an interdisciplinary team approach to innovative research.

  • Interpersonal skills to establish effective communication and working relationships with staff, faculty, administration, and external contacts.

Preferred Experience

  • A minimum of 10 years of professional experience

  • Five years of supervisory experience

  • Experience leading interdisciplinary research teams

  • Knowledge of Land Grant University System and Agricultural Experiment Stations

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent English oral, written, and electronic communication skills.

  • Ability to use personal computer to communicate effectively, prepare proposals to include cost information on spreadsheets, and provide reports of activities.

  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of multidisciplinary teams.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and stakeholders.

  • Ability to multi-task and recruit and manage support staff effectively.
