Associate Director, Career Services

Summary

The Associate Director for Career Development will serve as the primary contact for students, faculty, and staff as well as supervise the Career Development team, including a Career Counselor and Employee Relations Manager. This position will work closely with the Director of Career and Experiential Learning to design vision and goals as well as assess progress, industry trends, and identify students’ career readiness needs. The Associate Director will develop a strong relationship with each of the Colleges and Schools to ensure each academic major is supported and integrated into the Career Development process.


Essential Functions

Design and implement a plan for a modern Career Development Center that advances the university’s mission and strategic plan, with a focus on employment and internship placements:

  • Work closely with the Director for Career and Experiential Learning and Employee Relations Manager to establish a system that tracks all current and prospective partnerships.

  • Facilitate relationships between Academic Affairs partners and Engagement teams to ensure that Career Development is complementing the curriculum in each college and school.

  • Establish priorities based on enrollment, student interest, and market trends.

  • Design a series of events and programs that engage students and advance career readiness skills from the first year through graduation.

  • Increase relationship with faculty members and department chairs to embed career development into academic coursework.

  • Support Employer Relations Manager by visiting off-campus sites, attending networking and/or professional association functions.

Manage the Career Development unit with a focus on career readiness, internships, and job placement:

  • Oversee the Handshake platform scheduling system, ensuring that Career Counselors are posting appointments and workshops with students and faculty partners, including resume writing, cover letters, mock interviews, networking, and job search techniques.

  • Maintain Handshake’s job postings with relevant opportunities for students, and weekly summary that are targeted to appropriate audience (year and major).

  • Design needs assessment plan based on student enrollment by major, college, and school with a clear pathway to industry partners for internships, job shadowing, and externships.

Provide event and program support for the Career Development staff:

  • Oversee the implementation of career events, including career fairs, company information sessions, on campus workshops and interview days, internship awareness week, etc.

  • Partner on the implementation of leadership and inclusion events, including Leadership & Inclusion Conference, First Gen Day, Pride Week, Hispanic Heritage and Black History Month, and Women’s Summit as needed.

  • Manage the graduation survey process, manage outcomes assessment, and track first destination of graduate, utilization of services, employer and student satisfaction, and other career related data.

Provide supervision and direction for staff and unit operations:

  • Supervise Career Counselor and Employer Relations Manager.  

  • Provide professional development, monitor employee performance, and provide feedback following HR policies and procedures.

  • Contribute toward department goals, budget proposals, reports, and assessment plans.

  • Facilitate staff meetings and scheduling, ensuring representation on key university committees, events, and collaborative initiatives. 


Qualifications/Requirements

Master's degree is required.

3-5 years of relevant experience.

Responsible for managing and maintaining Handshake platform

Must be available to attend networking and/or professional association functions.

Advanced skills with MS Office Suite, SharePoint, Corq.

Excellent communication skills, oral and written.

Knowledge of higher education trends.
