GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Institute of Design (ID) at Illinois Tech, founded by Laszlo Moholy-Nagy as The New Bauhaus, is turning 85 this fall and plans are in the works to celebrate—with some big news to share about who we are now and where we’re going. This moment presents an incredible opportunity for a talented, curious, and creative Associate Director, Brand + Community Engagement to join our growing team, establish the ID brand for a wider audience, and build your outstanding portfolio with projects you conceptualize and deliver.
Our ideal candidate is a talented and creative graphic designer with social media expertise and strong project management skills.
Collaborating with and reporting to the Assistant Dean of Content + Influence, the Associate Director, Brand + Community Engagement will focus on growing and engaging external audiences by creating and executing a thoughtful brand strategy that leverages ID content and thought leadership. The Associate Director of Brand + Community Engagement will expand ID’s digital presence (including our website and social networks), integrating in-person and virtual events into their larger brand awareness and engagement strategy while clarifying and promoting ID’s core values.
A portfolio of design work is required to apply to this role.
COMMUNICATIONS
This position requires excellent written, verbal, visual, and interactive communications skills and will focus on external communications.
CUSTOMER SERVICE
Extending our reach and strengthening external engagement levels are the primary measures of accomplishment, as well as successful service delivery.

Qualifications


Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree preferred. 3–5 years of experience in marketing, brand management, graphic design, social media, community outreach, or communications preferred.
Knowledge & Skills
  • Knowledgeable and skilled at typography, visual design, branding fundamentals and comfort working within design systems.
  • Experience using social networks (including LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter) to engage key audiences, including alumni, and grow prospective/target audiences.
  • Working knowledge of the following: WordPress, Adobe Creative Suite, and video editing tools to customize content for a wide range of audiences, preferred.
  • Familiarity with Salesforce and other CRM platforms to coordinate, deliver, and manage communications with the design community (e.g. students, partners, donors).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, and Powerpoint).
  • Self-motivated with excellent project management and problem-solving skills.
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent email and phone etiquette with a strong customer service focus.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, listening and presentation skills.
  • Strong relationship-building and teamwork skills both with organizations and individuals.
  • Ability to manage and understand metrics and use them to iterate and improve campaigns, and collaborate to better direct resources to various outreach efforts.
  • Ability to maximize relevance of existing content and programs and maximize their use.
  • Interest in identifying visual storytelling opportunities (graphics, video) and using events to cultivate and grow communities.

SUPERVISION & BUDGET AUTHORITY

  • Supervise 1–2 student workers as needed and determined by strategy.
  • Manage a reputation-building budget of $10,000 a year, coordinating with colleagues to pool additional budgets for shared initiatives.

Physical Environment and Requirements
Position requires sitting at a computer 90% of the time to produce and coordinate work.
Occasional travel required.
Work up to 40% remote.

Key Responsibilities


Key Responsibility
  • Maintain, create, and organize brand assets, including digital (logomarks, reports, web articles) and physical (printed materials, promotional items, and swag)
  • Champion ID’s brand guidelines internally and externally.
  • Leverage and strategically develop ID’s multimedia library (photos, videos, print, podcasts).
  • Cultivate brand awareness.
  • Determine a brand strategy for the three legs of the Institute—the graduate school, Academy, and Action Lab—that build brand equity in ID while allowing each leg to connect with its specific audience(s).
  • Create a social media strategy mindful of ID’s current status and future plans.
  • Liaise with Illinois Tech Marketing Communications team and freelance designers, opening and managing projects to ensure quality of completed work.
  • Monitor effectiveness through analytics, gauging growth and engagement and adjusting strategy and goals accordingly.
  • Curate, create, and manage repository and distribution of brand-related items, including swag and promotional materials, apparel, signage, etc.

Key Responsibility
  • Execute a digital strategy (web, email, social media) to engage key audiences through compelling storytelling about students, projects, and events.
  • Optimize and maintain digital content for social media platforms and website(s).
  • Schedule all internal and external communications, delivering communications to our audiences and communities, including via MailChimp and Salesforce.
  • Manage key elements of our tech stack and, when necessary, partner with and coordinate outside contractors for platform maintenance (web, social, email, CRM, SEO).
  • Grow and maintain contact lists for events, media, and promotional partners.
  • Advise on and contribute to marketing campaigns beneficial to various ID initiatives, including recruitment, reputation-building, and events awareness.

  • Act as a representative at events for, or benefitting, ID.
  • Provide primary support for endowed lectures series.
  • Identify promotional opportunities and trends, suggesting events themes of interest to our growing community.
  • Collaborate with ID colleagues on recruitment-focused events and support ID students on student-run events.
  • Oversee ID Giving Day.
  • Nurture relationships with potential event partners.
  • Manage Eventbrite or other events platform and associated marketing efforts.
