Associate Director

Job Summary:

Under the supervision of the Director of Financial Aid, the Associate Director(s)
will have responsibility for coordinating programs that can include the following and which may rotate among Associate Director(s) as determined by the Director of Financial Aid:
Oversee, manage and coordinate the double degree program with Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS); work with JTS to develop student budgets and joint policy agreements. Determine both Barnard & JTS grant, loan and job eligibility and communicate information to the Director of the JTS Program. Revise JTS student packages each semester as program decisions are finalized.
Oversee, manage and coordinate the Study Abroad Program for students on financial aid who wish to participate in an approved Study Abroad program through the college. Work closely with the International & Intercultural Student Programs Office to verify compliance with policies as they change and add new approved programs.

Job Description:

1. Administer federal, state and institutional financial aid programs, policies and procedures.


2. Perform need analysis with an understanding of the principles of federal methodology including:


a. Evaluate and calculate awards with a thorough knowledge of and adherence to Barnard’s own policies and procedures.
b. Using professional judgment when appropriate to make individual exceptions to established policies and to determine when reconsiderations are valid and fair.
c. Award institutional and federal grants, loans and jobs.
d. Estimate federal state and outside need-based grants and loans.
e. Document interview and information obtained from families.


3. Assist with projects such as work-study policies and procedures.


4. Counsel students and parents regarding individual needs and this office’s response to those needs:


a. Exercise a comprehensive knowledge of Barnard financial aid policies and
procedures and awarding guidelines.
b. Possess a complete knowledge of federal and state programs in order to communicate eligibility for those program to parents and students.
c. Maintain strict confidentiality of all personal and financial information given to the Office of Financial Aid.


5. Assist students and parents in understanding financing options available through the Federal Direct lending Program including Stafford and PLUS Loans. Determine eligibility for these programs and process appropriate paperwork.

6. Review student records to ensure compliance with federal and state standards regarding academic progress and grade point average requirements.


7. Participate and represent the College at local, state and national conferences and attend selected meetings; represent the Financial Aid Office at Admissions Open House event and work closely with their office to provide information to staff, high school guidance counselors, prospective students and their parents.


8. Other related duties as assigned.

  • In-depth knowledge of federal and state financial aid programs and their requirements
  • Sensitivity to student needs and development
  • Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in financial aid.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of PowerFAIDS

Salary Range: $84,000 - $89,000

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the College's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
