The University of Virginia Health Development Office seeks either an Associate Director and/or Senior Associate Director, Healthcare Philanthropy to join our collaborative, high-achieving, and enthusiastic team in support of the continued success of the University's Honor the Future campaign.

Responsibilities will include identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding prospects and donors as part of UVA Health Development and the larger University community, with an emphasis on discovery work that builds the major gift pipeline for the program.  These responsibilities will include seeking gifts of $100,000 and above to advance the strategic priorities of UVA Health, including research, patient care, and education/training.  The incumbent will primarily work with patients and families who make gifts in gratitude for the care they received at UVA.  They will partner with physicians to identify prospective patient donors and to create appropriate fundraising strategies that comply with the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).  In partnership with development colleagues across Grounds, they will work with alumni, parents and friends across the University with an interest in health.

Responsibilities include serving as the lead fundraiser for specific programs and working collaboratively with other colleagues to staff the broad range of UVA Health priorities. The incumbents will report to the Executive Director, Healthcare Philanthropy.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree and at least three years of experience in fundraising or related work is required
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to develop relationships of trust and respect with a diverse range of constituents, including donors and prospects, healthcare providers, research faculty, administrators, and development colleagues
  • High emotional intelligence, empathy and ability to relate to individuals whose lives have been impacted by health experiences
  • Highest ethical standards and attention to confidentiality when dealing with donor and patient information
  • Thoughtful approach and sound judgment
  • Demonstrated ability to employ entrepreneurial approaches to meet deadlines and consistently achieve/exceed goals
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • High level of initiative and ownership with a strong orientation to teamwork
  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects
  • Ability to translate scientific concepts for the layperson
  • Ability to work effectively in a complex environment
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to use a database to maintain and review records and reports such as donor data, prospect contacts, solicitations, and proposals
  • Possess a command of cultural sensitivity and value and embrace cultural, political, and social differences. The incumbent will contribute to an environment that encourages diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Ability to travel is required, as well as occasional evening and weekend work

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Robust understanding of principles of philanthropy, higher education, healthcare philanthropy and relationship management
  • Success within collaborative fundraising models as well as academic medical center or healthcare environment
  • Consistent record of soliciting and closing gifts of $100,000+
  • Knowledge of current best practices in grateful patient fundraising
  • Previous work in or familiarity with an academic medical center or healthcare environment.
  • Experience in a collaborative fundraising environment/matrixed organizations also preferred.

This job will be filled at either the Associate or Senior Associate level, depending on the successful candidate's experience, knowledge, and competencies.  The ideal candidate at the Associate level will have at least three years of previous fundraising experience, a proven track record of managing high-level relationships, the ability to use a database to maintain and review records and reports such as donor data, prospect contacts, solicitations and proposals, and the ability to solicit and close gifts of $100,000.  The ideal candidate at the Senior Associate level will have at least five years of previous fundraising experience, a consistent record of soliciting and closing gifts of $100,000+, and proven experience of managing and developing fundraising strategies for specific programs.
