Description of Work
The Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts seeks an Associate Dean whose leadership will foster and advance a vibrant culture of teaching, research, creative activity, and innovation as central components of our College. This is an exciting opportunity for anyone interested in playing a transformative and leading role in the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts. Full-time, tenured faculty members of the College are encouraged to apply. This is a full-time, year-round position that reports directly to the dean.
The Associate Dean will be responsible for all matters pertaining to academic and faculty affairs. As part of an ongoing strategic assessment of College infrastructure, job responsibilities and organizations will shift as we align structures with significant changes, such as the introduction of professional advising.
Responsibilities – Academic Affairs
  • Oversee college curriculum planning, including course delivery and program assessment.
  • Represent the College on university-wide academic affairs committees and represent academic affairs on college-wide committees.
  • Administer faculty bylaws and governance policies and procedures, including college committees and calendars.
  • Coordinate and facilitate the promotion and tenure process.
  • Coordinate with School Directors for robust summer session offerings, oversee temporary instruction planning, and advise School Directors and the Dean on the college’s portfolio of online course offerings.
  • Oversee the college-wide use of Digital Measures/Activity Insight and other dashboards and databases (e.g., WebFocus, AWSYM, Student Insight, Classroom Insight).
  • Oversee the Hixson-Lied grant and professorship processes.
  • Serve on task forces for the College, particularly those dealing with admissions, advisement, and research and creative activity.
  • Serve as Acting Dean when the Dean is out of town and attend commencement and other campus-wide recognition and awards events as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities – Student Success
  • Supervise the College’s Assistant Director of Academic Planning and Processes.
  • Oversee graduation with distinction and thesis projects, Dean’s List, scholarships, probation/dismissal, and other academic concerns related to academic ethics and standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The Associate Dean is a 12-month “Fiscal Year” (FY) appointment with responsibilities for the full calendar year. Compensation includes a 12-month salary, calculated following university policy of multiplying the “Academic Year” (AY) 9-month salary by 11, and an administrative stipend. The position is leave-eligible and will accrue vacation leave, along with other leave. In addition, the Associate Dean will be provided annual support for travel.

Minimum Required Qualifications
  • Full-time, tenured Associate or Full Professor in one of the academic units in the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts.
  • Commitment to promoting innovative and interdisciplinary curricula and partnerships within and between the College’s units and across the University.
  • Ability to think strategically, communicate and advance change, assist in developing and implementing effective budgetary strategies, and support sustained excellence in the college.
  • Ability to help guide curricular changes to support enrollment growth.
  • Knowledge of academic programs across the College.
  • Excellent organizational and writing skills and attention to detail in helping to realize the vision for the College.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Flexible and resilient ability to work on duties as assigned during this exciting time of growth and change for the College.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Full-time, tenured Full Professor.
