Job Description

The Opportunity: 

The Prescott Campus of Embry Riddle Aeronautical University is searching for an Associate Dean of Students to oversee the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT). This position serves as part of the Dean of Student’s leadership and management team. The primary functions of the Associate Dean of Students are as follows: Chair the Behavioral Intervention Team; provide student care, support, and case management; provide oversight of the campus Grievance Process. Secondary responsibilities include serving as a conduct officer and representing the Dean of Students Office in conduct appeals; serving as a member of the Conduct Committee; responding to various questions, inquiries, and student needs that come to the Dean of Students Office; providing support to the Division of Student Affairs and the Student Affairs directors as needed.

Job Duties:

Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) Chair

  • Oversee and manage the Student of Concern process.
  • Train and oversee the campus Behavioral Intervention Team.
  • Create cases from reports and assign to a BIT member as appropriate.
  • Ensure the effective oversight and management of student cases and provide direct case management.
  • Lead regularly occurring BIT meetings and emergency BIT meetings when necessary.
  • Outreach to and serve as a resource for faculty, staff, and students regarding supporting and reporting students of concern.
  • Maintain and update the case management software, which includes the campus conduct and student of concern database, currently Maxient, ensuring it reflects the Student Handbook and processes.
  • Maintain and track all student of concern records.
  • Maintain good working relationships with relevant local agencies and community resources.
  • Assist the Dean of Students with keeping the Student Handbook current on a yearly basis, especially with regard to policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Provide a statistical summary after each semester and each academic year for all BIT related cases.
  • Maintain current knowledge of national trends, issues, and best practices related to BITs. Participate regularly in professional associations, conferences and professional development opportunities.

Student Care, Support, and Conduct

  • In collaboration with the Dean of Students and other Student Affairs staff, provide leadership in responding to various student needs that come to the attention of the office, including personal, academic, medical, emotional, and family situations. Meet with students and families and provide support as needed.
  • Serve as a resource for students to air concerns, gain information, and develop appropriate solution strategies.
  • Assist in responding to various inquiries for background and student conduct checks.
  • Seek out and maintain effective working relationships and collaborations with campus stakeholders and partners.
  • Seek out and maintain effective working relationships with various community resources and partners, including community mental health and crisis support resources and law enforcement.
  • Provide a key role as needed in assisting with crisis and emergency response in student cases. Serve as first responder for after-hour emergencies on behalf of Student Affairs and the Dean of Students Office.
  • Respond to inquiries, questions, and concerns from faculty, staff, parents, and other interested stakeholders.
  • Serve as a conduct officer for student and/or Recognized Student Organization (RSO) cases and represent the Dean of Students Office in the appeal process.
  • Maintain current knowledge of national trends, issues, and best practices related to student care, support, conduct, and crisis management; participate in professional associations and attend national conferences; advise on potential training and development needs and opportunities for the campus community.

Member, Conduct Committee

  • Serve as a key member of the campus Conduct Committee.
  • In collaboration with the Chief Student Conduct Officer and other members, ensure the effective oversight and management of student and Recognized Student Organization (RSO) conduct cases.
  • Serve as a resource for other conduct officers.

Oversight, Grievance Process

  • Oversee, manage, facilitate, and update the university Grievance Process.
  • In collaboration with other campus stakeholders, ensure that grievances are appropriately referred and/or addressed.
  • Maintain an accurate and ongoing inventory of all student grievances brought to the Dean of Students Office in compliance with accreditation requirements.
  • Assist the Dean of Students in maintaining accuracy in the Student Handbook and Catalog with regard to the Grievance Process.
  • Maintain currency in national trends with regard to Grievance Processes.

Departmental Responsibilities

  • Act as Dean of Students in the Dean’s absence.
  • Assist with the creation and regular updating of relevant student policies and procedures, especially those reflected in the Student Handbook and the campus Catalog, in support of the mission of the University.
  • Serve on committees, task forces, and working groups as needed and requested.
  • Provide support and leadership to the Division of Student Affairs and the other Student Affairs directors as needed.
  • Work with colleagues from Academic Affairs and other campus units on providing trainings, faculty and staff development opportunities, and support to faculty and other campus staff.
  • Assist the Dean of Students and the Dean of Students Office Assistant with providing oversight to the overall and effective functioning of the Dean of Students Office.
  • Other duties as assigned. Provide special project support and represent the Dean when appropriate.

Qualifications

Required education:

Master's degree in student affairs, higher education administration, or related field

Required skills, knowledge, abilities:

  • Five to ten years related work experience in a higher education setting
  • Firm understanding and experience with student conduct policies, practices, procedures, and national trends and best practices
  • Experience with student care, crisis management, and response
  • Computer skills (Microsoft operating systems, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook/email, internet end-user applications)
  • Prior work experience in student affairs strongly preferred
  • ASCA knowledge preferred; NABITA knowledge preferred
