Job Description:

Reporting to the Dean, the Associate Dean for Student Affairs in the School of Professional Studies is responsible for providing leadership in developing and delivering programs and direct support to over 1000 masterâ™s students in 26 programs. The person in this position builds relationships with students, academic programs, and units that support masterâ™s students and implements proactive plans, programs, and processes to help students connect with appropriate resources and address challenges in a timely way. This position coordinates interventions, referrals, and follow-up services within a broad network of campus and community resources. The end result of the work of this position is a framework of support that enables masterâ™s students to succeed in their academic programs.

Major Responsibilities:

Annual and Continuous Orientation

Supporting Actions:

⢠Develop and implement strategies to support successful onboarding and orientation, online and in person, of new masterâ™s students and their successful transition to graduate school.

⢠Provide outreach to new, continuing, and reinstated masterâ™s students to ensure overall readiness, assist with transition, and escalate outstanding matters that would affect their ability to have a smooth and successful start. Provide students with proactive guidance on re/acclimating and building supportive personal environments and best practices to facilitate their success.

⢠Design and lead masterâ™s orientation for students entering in summer and fall and design and lead ongoing re-orientation programming throughout the academic year.

⢠Work with the Office of International Students and Scholar Services to provide targeted content and programming to international masterâ™s students.

⢠Develop specific onboarding materials for Black, Latinx, and first-generation students and students with DACA status to support a smooth start. University Human Resources

⢠Collaborate with the Graduate School on orientation events.

⢠Collaborate with the School of Professional Studies♠Enrollment Management team to begin onboarding at the moment of enrollment.

Direct and Referral Support for Individuals

Supporting Actions:

⢠Provide counseling to students, with referrals to Student Accessibility Services, the Writing Center, and other campus resources as appropriate.

⢠In collaboration and communication with the relevant administrators and campus partners, inform students of institutional policies and procedures with regard to, adding and dropping courses, navigating requests for extensions and incompletes, referring complex cases to the Dean as appropriate.

⢠Advise students on and manage leaves of absence, including medical leaves.

⢠Provide guidance and support to students in resolving challenges that may impede their progress. Provide students with solution-oriented guidance, including information, resources, and support to aid in their success. Coordinate and recommend services for students with campus partners including Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Health Services, Student Accessibility Services staff, the Chaplains Office, and so forth.

Community Programming and Support

Supporting Actions:

⢠Collaborate with masterâ™s programs, campus centers, and campus partners (including the Graduate Student Council and Masterâ™s student affinity groups) to provide targeted, ongoing support and programming with regard to the identification of resources and navigating graduate school.

⢠Develop and lead comprehensive programming to build community and establish holistic support systems, with close attention to the needs of Black, Latinx, international, and first-generation students.

⢠Utilize climate survey data to make decisions about programs, strategies, and needs, advise on new assessments that may be needed and/or changes to current tools. Maintain data on student needs. Utilize current research and best practices to inform the work.

Engagement with, and support of, School of Professional Studies initiatives, projects, and other responsibilities

Supporting Actions:

⢠Participation in project teams, planning sessions, and other activities needed to define and execute overall SPS initiatives.


Education and Experience:

⢠Master's degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education, psychology, counseling, education, or related field and 5-7 years of relevant experience required. Required Skills:

⢠Demonstrated experience collaborating with academic and student affairs staff in a timely and professional manner.

⢠Knowledge of student advocacy best practices and methods.

⢠Demonstrated experience with and commitment to the values of access, equity, inclusion, and diversity in higher education.

⢠Proven ability to undertake academic advising successfully with residential populations in a college or university setting.

⢠Excellent verbal, writing, and presentation skills.

⢠Ability to communicate and interact effectively with students, faculty, staff, and all external constituencies.

⢠Strong computer skills including MS Word, Excel, student information databases, and Internet or web based applications.

⢠Ability to maintain composure in a fast-paced, dynamic, and demanding environment.

Preferred Skills:

⢠Experience with Masterâ™s students.

⢠Experience with distanced learning students.

⢠Experience with international students.

⢠Experience with Black, Latinx, and HUG students.
