It is also expected that time will be spent on duties such as teaching and research in the candidate’s home department to be negotiated before hiring is complete.
The key duties of the Associate Dean for Graduate Programs and Postdoctoral Affairs will include the following:
  • Responsible for representing the College Graduate Program at all levels of the University, including the Provost, the Graduate School, other Colleges, the Board of Trustees, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, as well as to members of the public and the press. The position is responsible for seeing that COE graduate programs are in compliance with all requirements, that proposals for new COE graduate courses and programs are prepared properly and are approved without undue delay, and that COE leadership is advised of important changes.
  • This position establishes priorities and strategic initiatives for graduate programs in the College of Engineering. Those priorities are accomplished in large part by departments, with considerable support from COE.
  • The College budget for supporting graduate programs, exclusive of funds for teaching assistants, is approximately $1.5M/year. This budget is managed by this position, and is allocated in accordance with the priorities for the university and college, and to best support the efforts of the departments.
  • The person holding this position is expected to exhibit leadership and to encourage best practices by the departments. An essential component of this work is interpretation and communication of university and college policies to the departments. This position also has oversight responsibilities with respect to assessment, and 8-year reviews of programs.
  • Collecting and analyzing an extensive set of performance metrics concerning College and Department graduate programs. This data is used to assess the health of programs, to focus attention and support on areas for improvement, and to report to higher levels of the university and general administration. This person is also responsible for ensuring that COE performance metrics used by others are correct and up to date.

  • This position is responsible for reporting graduate program metrics to external bodies such as the American Society of Engineering Education, and the US News and World Report. This includes not only verifying the correctness of data reported, but working to enhance the visibility and prestige of engineering graduate programs at N.C. State.
  • An important goal for the College of Engineering is ensuring a welcoming and supportive environment for all of our graduate students and postdocs. This position has responsibility for the development and execution of a strategic vision for how the college can support the departments in their goals of recruitment and retention of graduate students and postdocs from all backgrounds. This could include continuing and/or expanding college participation in various engineering professional societies and/or development of recruitment/partnership activities with select partner colleges and universities to enhance our recruiting efforts.
  • This position is part of the COE leadership team and as such contributes to annual reports, participates in important College meetings, and provides input to the Dean.
  • The Engineering Online (EOL) distance education program is regarded as one of the best in the nation, and maintaining that reputation is a priority. EOL makes engineering graduate education accessible to a wider population, including working professionals seeking to enhance their careers, and greatly expands the reach of the College of Engineering. This position has responsibility for promoting the Engineering Online distance education program, and for providing input on how EOL can best serve the needs of the College, the departments, and the students.
