Position Information

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The University of North Carolina, School of Law aspires to be a great public law school. Toward this end, it pursues a fourfold mission: to prepare outstanding lawyers and leaders for the bar, the bench, all public and private law settings, and public service; to make nationally and internationally significant legal and policy contributions through an ambitious agenda of research and scholarship; to instill lifelong ethical values, dedication to the cause of justice and a lasting commitment to pro bono and public service; and, to serve the legal profession, the people and institutions of North Carolina, the nation and the world.
Position Summary
The University of North Carolina School of Law seeks an experienced fundraising leader as its next Associate Dean for Advancement (AD).

Founded in 1845 and accredited by the American Bar Association since 1928, Carolina Law prepares outstanding lawyer-leaders to serve NC and beyond. The School’s 11,000+ alumni include former governors, federal and state judges and legislators, local government officials, and prominent corporate, academic, and nonprofit leaders. Historically, 70-75% of alumni are employed in private law practice, as in-house counsel, or as business executives and entrepreneurs. The remaining 25-30% work in public and non-profit settings, a higher proportion than most law schools of similar standing.
The School is home to four academic centers (banking, civil rights, environment, and media) and eight clinics (civil legal assistance, community development, consumer finances, domestic/sexual violence, immigration, intellectual property, veterans, and youth justice) and takes great pride in its national reputation for academic excellence, in offering legal education of a quality and value unmatched by any public law school, and in its diverse student body.
Dean Martin H. Brinkley ‘92, who joined the School in 2015 after 22 years in private practice and statewide leadership positions, oversees 64 full-time faculty, and approximately 600 students (75% NC residents; 25% out-of-state and international. Dean Brinkley has set ambitious fundraising goals and seeks an AD who will be a creative partner in achieving these goals.
The AD reports to the Dean, is a member of the Dean’s senior leadership team and has overall responsibility for meeting the School’s annual and campaign goals, as well as the activity metrics typical for a university fundraiser. The AD has responsibility for Alumni Engagement and Donor Relations. The AD leads a team of ten and manages the boards of the Alumni Association and Law Foundation.
For FY21-22, the final full fiscal year of the Campaign for Carolina, the law school surpassed its campaign goal ($75M) six months early and raised $1.5M unrestricted, up from $800K eight years ago when the campaign started. Over the last four years of the campaign, the law school averaged over $10M/year. As the campaign closes (December 31, 2022) the law school will have raised nearly $80M, having established over 50 new funds in support of student scholarships, helped support and establish important new school programs and, in general, significantly impacted the school’s competitiveness as a result of increased private support.
This position is expected to grow annual, capital, and planned gift programs; increase individual, corporate, and foundation giving. Manage portfolio of 100+ donors. Support the Dean’s fundraising efforts and assist faculty with fundraising-related activities. The selected candidate is responsible for direct solicitation of major gifts. It will lead and supervise the advancement and alumni engagement teams, establish clear performance expectations, and monitor progress. Promote a positive and effective work environment.
This position will also manage the boards of the Alumni Association and Law Foundation. Oversee expansion of alumni engagement efforts throughout NC and US. Collaborate with the School’s communications staff to develop marketing and social media strategies.
